Despite his sixth championship secured, Whincup keeps digging with pole position for race 35

That’s what could be said of Red Bull Racing ace, Jamie Whincup. Having already secured his sixth championship (out of 11 seasons), Whincup shows no signs of slowing down as he takes pole position for the final race at Phillip Island for 2014 with a time of 1:31.181

During the 20-minute qualifying session, spots of rain were reported so teams were keen on getting a quick lap down as quickly as possible.

McLaughlin back on the front row

After his pole position-to-checkered flag win yesterday, the young Volvo driver, Scott McLaughlin, is looking for a repeat. A true man of the 11^th hour, McLaughlin posted a late but strong time of 1:31.255 which took him to second position. As such, he will be starting in the front row for today’s race and will be hoping for a good start off the line.  

Frosty vs. Lowndes.

With the title ultimately secured for Whincup, the real battle is now between Winterbottom and Lowndes for second. With only 44 points between the two rivals, every remaining point up for grabs is crucial in the final events in the 2014 season.

‘Frosty’ didn’t waste a moment and recorded a strong time of 1:31.386 which puts him in third for the start of the final Phillip Island event.

Lowndes, who was briefly on the top, had no answer for the Ford Performance Racing (FPR) driver. With a meager time of 1:31.794, Lowndes will start from fifteenth position and will have a massive battle on his hands as he looks to work his way to the front.

Others of note

Garth Tander, Shane van Gisbergen, Michael Caruso, Nick Percat, James Courtney, Jason Bright and Chaz Mostert make up the remaining top-ten positions.

While yesterday’s two races were 20-laps each and did not require a pit-stop, today’s race is 45 laps. With many points still up for grabs, there are still numerous battles left to be decided as Winterbottom looks to secure second while his young teammate, Mostert, looks to gain entry into the top-five.
