Davison and Walsh both rocketed to the top reasonably late in the 20-minute session, using the softer compound Dunlops to record a 1m13.034s and a 1m13.290 respectively.

While pleased to be at the top, Davison said he would have liked to have been able to run the hard tyre ahead of today’s first qualifying session.

“I would have preferred an extra set of hard tyres, we had no hard tyres,” he said.

“There is no hiding that the car is well balanced on the soft tyre, but it’s hard to know where we are at on the hards.”

Nick Percat kept his strong weekend going by going third fastest, just 0.03s behind Walsh, while Penske’s Scott Pye was fourth fastest.

Including Pye, all five Ford Falcons in the field were inside the Top 10, with Chaz Mostert fifth, Mark Winterbottom sixth, David Reynolds ninth and Andre Heimgartner 10th. Mostert’s 1m13.50s was in fact the best time set on hard tyres, which could prove crucial for qualifying early this afternoon.

Shane van Gisbergn was seventh fastest, his Tekno crew having rectified the vibration uses that hampered the Kiwi yesterday, while Michael Caruso was the best Nissan in eighth.

Surprisingly, David Wall led the way for Volvo down in 14th, with Scott McLaughlin’s session cut short with an engine problem that left him stranded on track and ultimately on the sidelines for more than half of the 20 minutes.
