Heimgartner linked to Nissan Supercars seat

Amid speculation as to who will replace Kelly at the factory-backed squad, the Kiwi has emerged as the leading contender to join Rick Kelly, Michael Caruso, and Simona de Silvestro next season.

It would mean a return to the Supercars series, Heimgartner having driven for Prodrive under the Super Black Racing banner in 2015, before switching to LD Motorsport in 2016.

This year he moved to Carrera Cup, his only Supercars starts coming after being names as a last-minute injury replacement for Ash Walsh alongside Tim Slade at Bathurst and on the Gold Coast.

The Nissan outfit is currently keeping its cards close to its chest, neither confirming or denying the link to Heimgartner.

"We're flattered that a number of drivers have been attributed to the vacant seat in 2018," a Nissan spokesperson told Motorsport.com.

"We aren't in a position to confirm next year's line-up yet, but we are excited about the combination of youth, experience, and international influence."

Any deal would come as part of a shake-up in the Supercars field, with a number of drivers on the move next season.

Will Davison is set to join the rebranded and restructured 23Red Racing, his spot at Tekno likely to be taken by Jack Le Brocq.

Richie Stanaway is set to become a full-timer with the fourth seat at Prodrive, while Matt Stone Racing is poised to make the step to the main game, bringing Super2 driver Todd Hazelwood with it.

Garry Rogers Motorsport has now locked away its line-up with yesterday's confirmation that James Golding will partner Garth Tander.
