McConville secures LDM Supercars drive for Darwin

The veteran star was in the frame to take over the seat for the last round at Winton, before super sub Taz Douglas was drafted back in at the last minute.

McConville is now set to make his sprint round comeback for the small team after all, with a deal to drive the Repair Management Australia-backed Commodore at the next two rounds in Darwin and Townsville.

The 43-year-old will be teamed up with rookie Alex Rullo – who was born a year after McConville made his Supercars debut.

McConville last raced for the LDM squad at last year’s endurance races, he and Nick Percat pairing up to take an unlikely third place at the Bathurst 1000.

“I can’t wait to see Cam in action,” said team boss Lucas Dumbrell.

“His drive for LDM at the Bathurst 1000 last year is something he should be proud of; it was his performance early in the race that gave the team the momentum which eventually put us on the podium.

“[Sponsor] Phil Munday and I got together and thought, who better than Cam to drive for us in the Repair Management Australia Commodore?

“Not only is he experienced and fast but it would provide a benchmark for Alex who hasn’t even seen Hidden Valley Raceway.”

McConville said the opportunity to return to the popular Northern Territory circuit was one that was too good to pass up.

“I always enjoy racing in Darwin, as every driver does, so when Lucas and Phil Munday asked me to jump in it wasn’t a big arm twist to be honest,” he said.

“I haven’t driven a Supercar since the Gold Coast, so I’m very realistic about my goal for the weekend.

“My plan is to dial back in during practice and provide some mentoring to Alex and finish all of the races.

“Although LDM is a small operation, they always punch above their weight. I’ve known Lucas for a long time and Phil even longer, so it’s a privilege to help them out and I looking forward to assisting with their ongoing development.”
