Mostert poles, Holdsworth rolls
Chaz Mostert took pole for today’s 200-kilometre V8 Supercars race, while Lee Holdsworth’s session ended early with a roll-over in the notoriously deep Barbagallo Raceway sand.

Holdsworth provided the first highlight of the 20-minute session, gently rolling his Team 18/Walkinshaw Racing Commodore onto its side after running wide at turn six just under five minutes into the session.
Holdsworth was uninjured and able to get out of the stricken Commodore, but will have to start the race from last position due to the incident sparking a red flag stoppage.
Things went much better for Mostert, who took his second career pole in a V8 Supercar with a 57.132s lap on his final run. It was enough to displace team-mate Mark Winterbottom, who did enough to ensure a second Prodrive Racing Australia front-row lockout for the weekend.
“The car is a rocket ship,” said Mostert. “If every track was like Perth, I’d prefer that.”
Garth Tander, racing at his home circuit in Western Australia, qualified third for the Holden Racing Team, and will be joined on the second row by Triple Eight’s Jamie Whincup.
David Reynolds was fifth from Craig Lowndes, while Will Davison took an impressive P7 aboard the Erebus Mercedes.
Tim Slade will start eighth, Shane van Gisbergen ninth, and James Moffat – the best of the Nissans – from 10th.
It was another tough session for Volvo, with Scott McLaughlin managing just 13th on the grid in the S60.
Fabian Coulthard, a podium finisher yesterday, will join Holdsworth down the back of the grid after causing a late red flag himself.
The Kiwi ran wide at turn six and looked to be stranded, at which point the session was stopped. But seconds later Coulthard managed to drive out of the sand and back onto the track – only to not be allowed back in the session.
“It’s quite distressing,” said team boss Brad Jones.
“There’s not doubt he went off the road, but the amount of time before the red flag was shown was barely enough to get reverser gear. Anyway, we can’t of anything about it.”
