The Melbourne-based team is the middle of a staggered release for its retro liveries, with the Caruso car following yesterday’s announcement of a Brock Racing Enterprises-inspired colour scheme for Rick and Todd Kelly.

Caruso’s car will carry a slightly more contemporary throwback livery, he and co-driver Dean Fiore set to sport colours based on the famous Calsonic GT-R that dominated Japanese Touring Car racing in the early 1990s.

The car played a crucial role in the GT-R’s remarkably dominant run in Japan between 1990 and 1993, winning two titles and 15 rounds amid the the 29-round perfect record set by the all-conquering, all-wheel-drive Group A cars.

Its fame was taken worldwide when it became one of the hero cars in the original Gran Turismo game.

“Nissan has achieved a lot in global motorsport and there are so many great liveries to choose from," said Caruso.

"The Calsonic livery is one of Nissan's most famous and perfectly represents its racing heritage.

“The original Calsonic GT-R was so successful on the track. A perfect record is unheard of in motorsport, so this definitely elevates this car to legendary status.

“Mark Skaife explained what it was like to drive and it sounded wild. What a beast!

"I hope I can emulate its success at the Sandown 500."

The Calsonic colour scheme will get its first hit-out at today’s Dunlop tyre test at Phillip Island, before all four Nissans are back on track at Winton on Wednesday for the team’s pre-enduros test.

A retro livery for Simona de Silvestro’s car is set to follow tomorrow.
