Premat hits back at critics with Sandown podium

Alex Premat says he did the “right job” in finishing second alongside Shane van Gisbergen at the Sandown 500, after copping some pre-event heat for his lack of recent race miles.

The Frenchman’s race fitness came into question in the build-up to the season of endurance, thanks to the fact that he hadn’t taken part in a proper race since the Daytona 24 Hour back in January.

The spotlight was thrust even more firmly on Premat due to his move to the title-contending #97 Red Bull Racing Australia car.

But race craft didn’t seem to be an issue for Premat at Sandown; he made up a spot during Saturday’s co-driver qualifying race, turning van Gisbergen’s ninth on the grid to eighth place at the end of 20 laps.

And in the 500 itself, Premat put in a workman-like stint to help put van Gisbergen into a position to work his way up to second place, and almost steal victory from eventual winner Garth Tander.

“I think I did the right job,” said Premat after the race. “I haven’t made any mistakes since I’ve been here three weeks.

“I love how the team was operating. I feel confident and they don’t put you under any pressure.

“I know there was a lot of discussion about Shane’s championship, but everything is working good.”

Premat will head to Bathurst as the points leader’s co-driver, van Gisbergen now holding a seven-point advantage over team-mate Jamie Whincup.

“I know Bathurst, I would say the last two years I had good chances to win the race with Scott [McLaughlin],” added Premat. “Today was a big warmup with Shane, and the next step is Bathurst.”
