Prodrive denies bold Mustang claims

Prodrive Racing Australia has poured cold water on a sensationalist newspaper report suggesting that the Mustang bodyshape will definitely replace the Falcon FG X in Supercars next season.

It’s no secret that both PRA and DJR Team Penske – the last remaining Ford teams in Supercars – are evaluating the Mustang as a potential Falcon replacement for 2018.

With the Gen2 rules now allowing such a move, Prodrive team boss Tim Edwards told Motorsport.com last December that the two-door Mustang could replace the FG X as soon as 2018.

Those thoughts were echoed by DJRTP boss Ryan Story in February this year.

While the Mustang entering the series next season is entirely feasible, it seems claims from Australian newspaper The Daily Telegraph that it is a done deal have come prematurely. Originally published under the headline ‘Mustang to make Supercars debut’, the story has led to PRA releasing a statement to say that there is still no definitive news to report.

“Prodrive Racing (Australia) would like to clarify a report in today’s The Daily Telegraph which claims the team will be running a Ford Mustang Supercar in the 2018 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship,” read the statement.

“No such decision has been made.

“As previously confirmed by the team, it is evaluating options for the eventual replacement of its current multiple championship-winning Ford FG X Falcon Supercar.

“This process is ongoing and involves consultation with multiple partners.

“Prodrive Racing appreciates the significant level of interest in this process from members, fans and the media, but confirmation of its future plans will be made at the appropriate time.”

The Telegraph story was later altered to a softer headline, which refers to a Mustang debut being 'on the cards'.
