Retro HRT theme for HSV Racing at Sandown

HSV Racing will look back to the beginning of the team’s association with sponsor Mobil 1 for its second Retro Round livery for the Sandown 500.

The team yesterday pulled the covers off James Courtney and Jack Perkins’ throwback livery, which is inspired by the Walkinshaw-run HSV Dealer Team that won back-to-back Supercars titles in 2006 and 2007.

For Scott Pye and Warren Luff’s Commodore the team has opted to look even further back, recreating the iconic blue and white colour scheme used by the squad in its Holden Racing Team guise back in 1994.

The livery is significant in that it kickstarted the relationship between the Walkinshaw outfit and sponsor Mobil 1, a relationship that continues to this day.

It was also the year that Peter Brock returned to the factory Holden fold, which hasn’t been forgotten on the ‘throwback’ livery for Sandown this weekend; the car will run as #02 rather than just #2, a play on Brock’s famous #05.

“To have the blue and white of Mobil 1 on the car is a real privilege,” said HSV Racing’s General Manager of Motorsport Mathew Nillson.

“It’s something everyone in the team is really excited about, and something we hope all the fans will love.

“When you think about celebrating the history of Walkinshaw Racing for Retro Round, the blue and white Mobil 1 branded Commodore with Brocky at the wheel is one of the first things that springs to mind.”

Pye and Luff have also been fitted out with retro-themed race suits.

Practice for the Sandown 500 kicks off on Friday morning.
