Reynolds denied 'Craig Lowndes moment'

David Reynolds has joked that he was denied a crowd-pleasing 'Craig Lowndes moment' in the wake of Fabian Coulthard's rollover at Pukekohe.

The Bathurst 1000 winner was caught up in Coulthard's dramatic DNF from the first race in New Zealand today, clashing with the Kiwi as he scrambled to recover from being hit by Chaz Mostert at the hairpin.

As a result both Reynolds and Coulthard ended up off the road and in the sand, Reynolds nosing into the wall while Coulthard's car dug in and rolled.

The rollover ended Coulthard's race on the spot, and has left his title hopes in tatters.

While not in title contention himself, Reynolds was still left feeling short-changed from the incident – for a rather unique, light-hearted reason.

After seeing Coulthard's car come to a rest on its roof, and spotting what he thought was smoke coming from window, Reynolds quickly jumped out of his own car poised to make a heroic rescue effort.

However, the smoke turned out to be steam from the car's dry ice box. And as Coulthard extricated himself from the car unharmed, Reynolds was left without the moment he says would have made him a fan favourite like Craig Lowndes.

"When I saw Fabian's car upside down, I got out of my car because it looked like his car was catching on fire," explained Reynolds.

"But then he got out and he was alright, so I got back in my car and resumed racing. I strapped myself back in, plugged all my stuff back in – it was kind of funny!

"I thought 'here comes my Craig Lowndes moment'. I realised it was dry ice after he got out. There goes my Craig Lowndes moment to win over the fans!"

Lowndes is the clear fan favourite in Supercars, and was involved in his own heart-warming rollover rescue at Bathurst in 2014.

Having been hit by Warren Luff's Holden Racing Team Commodore during practice, Lowndes jumped out of his own wrecked car to make sure Luff – whose car had rolled onto its side seconds later – was unharmed in the crash.

With Lowndes having helped Luff out of the car, the pair embraced to cap off a touching moment of sportsmanship.
