David Reynolds says he and Erebus can contend for race victories in Supercars now the team has started to turn its qualifying form around.

Reynolds has enjoyed a strong start to the season for the compact Erebus squad, with eight Top 10 finishes from the 12 races so far, highlighted with a third at Phillip Island back in April.

His qualifying performances have been less consistent, however, with only six grid spots inside the Top 10.

There were signs of improved single-lap form last time out in Darwin, though, with Reynolds qualifying fourth in regular qualifying on both Saturday and Sunday, although he started seventh on Sunday after making a mistake on his Shootout lap.

According to Reynolds, better qualifying pace could be the last step he and the team need to take to contend for victories – even as soon as this weekend in Townsville.

“Qualifying is everything in our sport and we’ve had a good race car but we haven’t been able to qualify well,” Reynolds said.

“It’s something we have been targeting for a while and although you can never be sure of how you’ll go on the day, it’s good to know that you’re going to be somewhere near the front.

“I think we should have a strong weekend again [in Townsville]; if we can tick the box and qualify on the front row, we give ourselves the best chance to win races.

“The team are doing a fantastic job and we are all working to that one goal; hopefully it comes sooner rather than later.

“We are a very small team compared to the larger teams, and it might take us a little bit longer to get there, but we will get there.

“There is no reason we can’t get a good result, it’s just a matter of getting everything right on the day.”

Sitting eighth in the standings, Reynolds also admitted that being one of the category’s form drivers and consistently in the mix for Top 10 results is a sign of a ‘massive step’ from Erebus.

“You aim to win every race, but considering where we were at the start of last year, we have taken a massive step to where we are now,” he said.

“It’s definitely ahead of where I thought we would be at this point.”
