The team has been running a rolling sponsorship programme since the merger between Dick Johnson Racing and Roger Penske’s American outfit merged for the 2015 season, with the DJRTP cars switching between Penske-affiliated brands – including Shell.
But the team will have a more consistent look for the 2017 season, Fabian Coulthard and new signing Scott McLaughlin both racing Shell V-Power cars for the whole season.
It’s a deal with historical significance in Australia, Shell having been the primary backer of the Dick Johnson Racing outfit from 1988 to 2004.
“The history between Shell, DJR Team Penske and now [Australian Shell licensee] Viva Energy goes beyond sponsorship, being trusted partners on and off the track, technically with the race team and commercially with the Penske businesses,” said Viva Energy Australia’s CEO Scott Wyatt.
“We look forward to seeing the innovation and performance gains translate on track under the new Shell V-Power Racing team, as we see the best of Shell V-Power and DJR Team Penske culminate in this exciting partnership.”
There will be a preview of what’s to come this weekend at Bathurst, with both DJRTP cars to run Shell colours for the second time this season.
“Our Number 17 and Number 12 Fords will proudly carry the Shell V-Power primary branding for the foreseeable future. With a strong driver line up we believe our third year in the Supercars Championship will continue our move up the grid,” said Roger Penske, who is set to make his first appearance at Bathurst this week.
“The increased partnership from Shell with DJR Team Penske means the Shell brand will once again have a significant presence in Australian motorsport, so it is only fitting we announce this partnership as we head to Bathurst, Australia’s most iconic motorsports event.”
