The Queensland-based team, which became a joint-venture with Team Penske in 2015, is famous for its association with Shell, from the Shell Sierras in the late 1980s to the Shell Falcons that ran until the mid-2000s.

While the backing from Shell was dialled back after the 2004 Supercars season it never fully eroded, and the brand return as the team’s primary backer on a full-time basis for the 2017 season.

At the upcoming Sandown 500 retro round the full scale of the relationship between DJR and Shell, a 50-year partnership that even included Dick and Jill Johnson owning a Shell service station until the mid-1980s, will be celebrated with a throwback livery.

“Shell has always been there for me, through good times and bad,” said team part-owner Johnson.

“Even when I raced on-track with competitor branding in the early 1980s, I continued to own the Shell service station. Having them return in a big way this year feels very much like rewinding to the good old days.

“I’m extremely proud of the duration of our relationship, and even prouder that we’re repaying Shell’s support with great on-track results.”

The livery will make its on-track debut at today’s pre-enduros test at Queensland Raceway, which will see regular drivers Scott McLaughlin and Fabian Coulthard in action with their respective co-drivers Alex Premat and Tony D’Alberto.
