Supercars wildcard entries confirmed

The category opened up the Barbagallo Raceway, Winton, Hidden Valley, and Queensland Raceway rounds to non-main series drivers this season, hoping to attract one-off entries from leading Super2 competitors.

The offer has been taken up by five different drivers according to a list published on the official Supercars website, with Macauley Jones, Jack Le Brocq, Shae Davies, Todd Hazelwood, and James Golding all set for wildcard outings.

Brad Jones Racing driver Jones will race at the Winton and Hidden Valley round, while Garry Rogers Motorsport young gun Golding – who is without full-time Super 2 ride this season – will run at Winton and Queensland Raceway.

MW Motorsport/Nissan driver Le Brocq is entered for Hidden Valley and Queensland Raceway, while teammate Davies will follow Golding’s lead with the Winton/QR split.

Matt Stone Racing driver Hazelwood will only run in Queensland.

According to Le Brocq, the opportunity to race in the main game at a sprint round will be a valuable, if not easy, experience.

“Once it became clear that there wasn’t the right opportunity to progress to the main game [full-time] this year, our focus swung to putting together as complete a programme as possible for 2017 and these wildcard races were always a key component of that,” he said

“It’s a hugely exciting opportunity and Nissan Motorsport has been tremendously supportive through this process, assisting whenever they can to help us make it happen.

“I have no allusions about this… I know how good the guys are in Supercars and I know it’ll be tough, but I have run competitively with them in the Endurance Cup and I’ve been in the cars as part of my role with the Nissan Motorsport programme this year.

“I can’t wait to get onto the track in Darwin.”
