Tasmania V8s: Davison stripped of pole, Winterbottom takes P1

Tekno Holden driver Davison emerged quickest from the session, a 51.017s with just 30 seconds of the session remaining giving him a 0.05s gap over Winterbottom.

However, Davison’s elation only lasted several minutes. He was quickly demoted two grid positions thanks the beginning of the final runs.

That was good news for Winterbottom, who was awarded his second pole of the weekend as a result.

“That’s weird,” said the reigning champion. “Genuinely P2, [so] well done to Will – that’s unfortunate for him. For me, in my head I’m P2.”

Davison, meanwhile, was mystified with the penalty.

“I don’t even know. Three cars cars came out of the pits behind me slowly,” he said.

“So, we’re all going its low speed assuming we’re on the same speed. I had no idea James was on a lap, I didn’t even see him until the hairpin.

“That’s mad if I get a penalty.”

Yesterday’s race winner Shane van Gisbergen also benefited from Davison’s penalty, his 51.193s – which had him fastest with 90 seconds of the session to go – ultimately good enough for a front row start.

Jamie Whincup was fourth fastest, Lee Holdsworth kept Team 18’s promising weekend going with P5, while Chaz Mostert was P6 – despite being less than two tenths off pole.

Jason Bright edged out former team-mate Fabian Coulthard for seventh, Scott McLaughlin was the best Volvo in P9, Cam Waters round out the Top 10, while Craig Lowndes was just 11th in the third Triple Eight car.
