Test thwarts Cindric Supercars debut plan

A plan for Austin Cindric to make his Supercars debut in Newcastle next month has been scuppered by a date clash.

The American up-and-comer was set to enter in the second-tier Super2 category at the season finale, making good on a long-held ambition to compete in the Aussie Touring Car series.

However, a scheduling conflict with an ‘important test’ has thwarted the plan, meaning Cindric’s Supercars debut will have to wait.

“Unfortunately that’s not happening,” he confirmed to Motorsport.com.

“I really wanted to because I’ve been really trying to get my feet wet in that area of motorsport, but it couldn’t work out for a multitude of reasons, primarily a scheduling conflict.

“There’s a fairly important test that I might be able to be part of – I can’t go into the details, but I hope it’s going to come to fruition.

“I wish I was there.”

Despite his link to DJR Team Penske through father Tim Cindric, President of the Team Penske organisation, Cindric says the Super2 drive wouldn’t have been in a DJRTP-run car.

He declined to confirm which team he would have raced for, although Cindric does have links to Super2 squad Matt Stone Racing, having tested for the squad way back in 2014.

Cindric’s latest Supercars miles came last year, when he tested Fabian Coulthard’s Penske Ford at Queensland Raceway.

While the Newcastle drive appears to now be off the table, Cindric made it clear that he’ll continue to look for an opportunity to race a Supercar.

Part of that plan is try and ink a Bathurst 12 Hour deal for next February, having already competed at the Mount Panorama GT enduro in 2015 and 2016.

“I will say, it’s not going to be my last try to make something happen in Supercars,” he said.

“I’d still love to go down there, and my first priority will be to do the Bathurst 12 Hour next year.

“I tried like crazy to get back there this year and I had three different things fall through to make that not happen.

“The one thing that usually plays in my favour is the driver ratings because they have a Pro/Pro category which means that maybe I can get in with somebody who realizes my track experience, my racing experience.

“That’s a ways down the road though. I’ve got to focus on what I’m going to do full-time next year and hopefully there’ll be a chance to do the Bathurst 12 Hour.”

The 19-year-old is currently competing in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, finishing fourth in Las Vegas last week.
