Pole position in this afternoon's first race at Phillip Island was rewarded with two top five finishes for Fabian Coulthard who says he knows where the team must improve.

In both races Coulthard and team-mate Jason Bright struggled with starts, Coulthard bogging the first from pole position and dropping to fifth. Alex Davison sat on his bumper for the remainder of the 23 laps making it a tense but ultimately uneventful race for Coulthard who held station until the chequered flag.

In the second race Coulthard again had trouble getting off the line and dropped to seventh from fourth. From there he pulled off a stunning move on Will Davison and Shane Van Gisbergen, passing both in one corner on lap 15 to finish fifth.

The final round of the V8 Supercar Championship season will be the Sydney 500 from December 6-8.

"Brighty and I both struggled off the start in today's first race. My car bogged. I think we've got a little bit of a mapping drama because the same thing happened in the second race. The engine had a little cough and you can't afford to be off the throttle when other people are right up it.

"It would have been nice to lead into the first corner but it's good that we have areas to improve. It's not like we don't know what they are!

"I saw the opportunity coming with Shane and Will. Shane had a bit of an over-steer moment, which allowed Will to get up alongside. I had great momentum so I pulled to the inside because I had such a good run. It was nice to pass two people in the one corner."
