V8 teams don’t take me seriously

Davison, younger cousin of V8 Supercars star Will Davison, was born in Australia, but has actually done very little racing in his home country.

Apart from some state Formula Ford in Victoria in 2004, the majority of his racing has been done in North America, Davison switching to Formula BMW USA in 2005.

Since then he as concentrated on sportscars and open-wheelers in the US, and has competed at the last two Indy 500s, finishing 27th in yesterday’s race.

Speaking to Motorsport.com, Davison admitted that he has always had an eye on returning home to race V8 Supercars, but that the local teams don’t take him seriously.

“I’ve always wanted to do the V8 enduros, but for whatever reason, the industry down there has never taken me seriously,” Davison said.

“Things have changed since I was really looking at doing the V8 enduros. I have a lot more endurance racing, sportscar experience, and success now.

“There's a chance later in my career that I could do the V8 enduros but my career in North America is absolutely where I want to be, it's my priority. I love it here and wouldn't have it any other way.

“Ultimately, because I was born in Australia and grew up watching V8 Supercars, it's of interest to me but certainly not the top priority right now.”

Focus on sportscars

Davison may have initially moved to the US to chase an IndyCar dream, he has since found a happy home in sportscar racing.

He is currently splitting his time between a TUSC drive for TRG-AMR, and a Pirelli World Challenge for Nissan in the GT class – and says it would have to take a heck of an IndyCar offer for him to make the permanent switch back to open-wheelers.

“I came to America to be an IndyCar driver but the financial side is tough on new, unestablished young drivers,” he said.

“Very good doors in sportscar racing have opened up for me and I think it's the next best thing to be able to race sportscars full-time and run 'the' IndyCar race each year.

“In terms of job security, I would need a very good offer in IndyCar to pass up on my sportscar career.”
