On what has been a record-breaking weekend in terms of laptimes, Mostert became the first man to go under 1m19s in a V8 Supercar when he went fastest with a 1m18.803s midway through the session.

He then lowered that time with a minute to go, responding to quick times from Craig Lowndes and Fabian Coulthard with a 1m17.760s to secure pole.

“This one goes to my engineer Brad [Wischusen],” said Mostert.

“We were a little bit behind the eight-ball in practice but he stuck to his guns, and he gave me a really fast car.

“I’m looking forward to the race, I started 10th yesterday and had good race pace, so it’s going to be a bit nicer starting a bit more forward.”

Coulthard will start second, missing out on pole by 0.005s, while Lowndes was 0.06s down on pole.

Yesterday’s fairytale winner Tim Slade made final-run gains to pop up on the outside of the second row, while Michael Caruso, Scott McLaughlin, and Rick Kelly all put in 1m18s laps to fill the next three spots.

Jamie Whincup was the best of the Red Bulls back in eighth, ahead of Will Davison and Mark Winterbottom, while Shane van Gisbergen will start 12th after running off at the last corner when he was on to improve on his final run.Winton V8s: Mostert lowers record again in qualifying
