Rocky Mountain Chapter, Pike's Peak International Raceway, Fountain, Colo., Vintage Grand Prix of the Rockies, Sept. 4 to 6 A diverse group of 27 vintage and contemporary BMW CCA Club racers, supported by an incredible display of BMW NA's finest vintage race cars (direct from the Monterey Historics), did an outstanding job of representing BMW as the featured marque of this year's Rocky Mountain Vintage Motorsports (RMVR) Vintage Grand Prix of the Rockies, the inaugural race for the Rocky Mountain Chapter BMW CCA. Race chairman Art Krill and RMVR event chairman Arthur Porter of club racing sponsor Rocky Mountain Motorworks hosted a great event with entrants ranging from overall winner Bill Bentzen's E30 M3 and second overall Peter Herke's 1967 3.0CSL to Alf Gebhardt's Camel Lights IMSA GTP car and two of the nation's finest 1800TISAs.
BMW Club of Canada, Mosport Int'l Raceway, Bowmanville, Ont., Sept. 11 and 12 BMW CC's first solo club race saw 14 cars contest the demanding Mosport circuit and produced the first Canadian overall winner in brothers Steve and Frank Coliviras. Thanks for the invite, BMW CC! We'll renew the challenge in 2000!
Golden Gate Chapter, Thunderhill Park, Calif., Sept. 11 and 12 Eleven cars competed in a four-race weekend at the Golden Gate Chapter's Thunderhill event with overall winner Gino Lancellotti's DModified 318is taking top honors in the feature races.
Golden Gate Chapter, Sears Point Raceway, Sonoma, Calif., Oct. 9 and 10 Fourteen cars challenged the Sears Point course with Thunderhill winner Gino Lancellotti scoring another overall victory in the three- race weekend, with hot pursuit from DMods Chuck Quarton (E30-M3) and Bruce Todd's 325IS, who traded second and third overall throughout the event.
Delaware Valley Chapter, Pocono Raceway, Pocono, Pa., Oct. 9 and 10 The series returned east with 32 cars (including 18 M3s and four 2002s) challenging the combined high bank/infield north course at Pocono. Split into two groups by class and lap times, there was great racing throughout both fields, with the added drama of the Group A cars running in increasingly dense fog on Sunday. The shortened race was won by Chuck Stickley's BMod E36 M3 with Mike Yaskin's pole-winning AMod 5 series in close pursuit. The Group B race was won decisively by Mitch Herman's J Prep E30 M3, featuring the right combination of a talented drive and the right tires for the clearing but wet conditions. He was followed by George Kissinger's E36 HStock M3, solidifying George's domination of the M3 class in this year's BMW NA Challenge Trophy program. Among the highlights of the event was the close competition between Ross Karlin's EMod 320i and the three 2002s of Gordon Foster, Bill Zick and John Weaver.
