Lake Speed among the winners during Brumos Continental Historics.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., (Nov. 2, 2202) -- Lake Speed, retired from NASCAR Winston Cup Series competition since 1998, drove into Victory Lane on Saturday at Daytona International Speedway as a winner in the Historic Stock Car Feature Race during the Brumos Continental Historics.

Speed, driving the No. 83 Ford Thunderbird that he built, owned and raced in the early 1990s, couldn't help but think about all the other victories that have escaped him at the "World Center of Racing" as he drove into Victory Lane after pulling off the dominating win.

"This place has been really avoiding me for a long time," said an emotional Speed holding back the tears. "There have been so many near-misses here where we thought we're going to win races."

Speed, who finished second in the 1985 Daytona 500, had a little problem with the start of the eight-lap race, but then cruised to victory.

"They got me confused on the start," Speed said. "They told me we were not going to be passing until you passed the start/finish line. I looked up and the other guy had left and the flagman was waving green so I guess they changed their mind. So I took off and the car was real fast.

"We have not turned a screw on the thing since we got here other than fixing a few problems."

Speed, who will get a chance on Sunday at 3:05 p.m. to sweep both Historic Stock Car Racing Association races at Daytona, says he might continue to compete in the series next season.

"I think this is something I can do and enjoy doing," said Speed, who returned to the driver's seat for the first time since his retirement in February at Phoenix in a HSCRA event. "It doesn't matter if I win a race or don't win a race. Just to go out and run against the race track and the stop watches is everything in itself."

In some of the other action in Saturday's Brumos Continental Historics, the Rolex Vintage Enduro turned into a family affair as the team of Josh Vargo and Brady Refenning took home the victory in a 1965 Porsche 911.

Josh Vargo's father Tim and Brady Refenning's father Jack settled for a third-place finish aboard a 1966 Porsche 911 while finishing second was the team Terry Wolters and Bill Bryan in a 1970 Porsche.

The Brumos Continental Historics concludes on Sunday at Daytona. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or by calling the Speedway ticket office at (386) 253-7223.
