Notes and Quotes -- Saturday, May 1, 2010

If you love racing, Road Atlanta was the place to be Saturday for the 34th annual Classic Motorsports Mitty presented by Mazda. Twelve sprint race and one enduro filled the day's schedule with plenty of exciting racing action.

SCCA PLAYBOY MAZDA M X-5 CUP STEPS BACK IN TIME

The Mazda staff, Playboy models and special guest driver John Morton all showed up at Road Atlanta today attired in 1970's clothing as they paid homage to the legend of Peter Brock and Brock Racing Enterprises (BRE). Morton, former BRE team driver in the 1970s, drove the No. 19 Brock Racing Enterprises/Mazdaspeed "tribute" Mazda MX-5 car with BRE historic livery design. The Mazda staff wore classic 1970s white pants with blue shirts and scarves. The Playboy models wore mini-dresses and classic white go-go boots.

BRE DATSUN PARADE LAP WOWS FANS

MITTY Grand Marshal Peter Brock lead a field of two dozen legendary Datsuns around the 2.54-mile Road Atlanta circuit during lunch hour for the crowd of fans and racing enthusiasts. He paced the field of 1970s Datsuns in the 2010 Nissan 370Z BRE "tribute" car. More than half the field sported the iconic red, white and blue bars of the BRE livery. Comedian and car enthusiast Adam Carolla drove a Datsun from his personal car collection, a 1969 BRE Datsun 2000 Roadster.

Many former BRE team members were on-hand for the BRE Reunion Parade Lap, including John McComb, Kirk Allegro, Trevor Harris, John Knepp, Joe Cavaglieri, Bob Lyon and John Caldwell.

AC/DC LEAD SINGER BRIAN JOHNSON ON PODIUM IN VINTAGE ENDURO RACE

Brian Johnson, back in Historic Sportscar Racing after a two-year hiatus to tour the world with his band, AC/DC, was delighted to be on the podium for Saturday's one-hour Vintage Enduro race.

"That guy (third-place finisher Jerry Loftin) was driving like a mad man. It was like he had a herd of stallions ... I guess he did, he was driving a Mustang. It was like David and Goliath with me in our little Royale. There was red dust flying up there in Turn 7 those last couple of laps. It was exciting, I'm sure the fans loved it."

While taking a brief break from the "Black Ice Tour" for a weekend of racing, Johnson added, "Don't tell the record company management about this."

CAYMAN INTERSERIES POLESITTER TURNS DEBUT INTO VICTORY

Steve Jenkins turned a first-time pole into a first-time victory in his debut race in the Cayman Interseries today. After topping the time sheets in Friday's pair of practice sessions, Jenkins captured the pole in Saturday morning qualifying and led the field to the green flag later that afternoon for the first of this weekend's two sprint races, leading all the way.

"I loved the track. Turn 7 is always the most important turn because that sets you up for the back stretch. One of the reasons I came here was this and Sebring were two tracks I'd never driven. This was great today."

STOCK CAR RACING AT ROAD ATLANTA

Mark Furcini of Phoenix, Arizona was the victor in the Historic Stock Car class at the MITTY. He drove the No. 42 Texaco Charger formerly driven to second place in the 2004 Sears Point race by the 2010 Daytona 500 winner Jamie McMurray.

"These cars handle like sports cars," said Furcini. "People think they're big and heavy but the braking is excellent and coming out of Turn 7 is just launches you."

FORMER IMSA CHAMPIONS GO HEAD-TO-HEAD

Houston, Texas native George Robinson beat out England's Andy Wallace in the Group 6 Historic GTP/WSC/DP class by nearly a two-second margin of victory.

"The car ran great. Andy (Wallace) ran really hard but we had a clean track and everything worked out. Road Atlanta is the greatest track in America," said Robinson.

FORMER TRANS-AM MUSTANGS DOMINATE

Richard Howe, driver of the No. 89 Mustang Trans-Am GTO of Boston took home the top trophy in the Group 9 Historic GT class.

"It's great racing teammates," said Howe. "You know what they're going to do. I can get the best of (Donald) Soenen here but he always beats me at Sebring. It's just different strategy I guess because we're so close when we're running. Whenever I ask myself why I race, it's races like this that tell me why."

Racing begins at 8:05 a.m. ET with a one-hour Classic GT Enduro on Sunday morning, May 2, with another 11 races to follow. For more information, go to www.themitty.com or www.hsrrace.com.
