SONOMA, Calif. - Walnut Creek's Steve Romak was the top qualifier on Saturday at Sears Point Raceway for the Historic Grand Prix featuring Vintage Formula One race cars at the Chrsyler-Jeep-Dodge Wine Country Classic.

Romak piloted his 1983 Williams FWO8C to victory in the 13-lap qualifying race with an average speed of 95.264 mph over the 12-turn, 2.52-mile road course. Romak just edged Patrick Van Schoote for the checkered flag by .488 seconds. Van Schoote, from La Jolla, piloted a 1981 Alfa-Romeo. James King of Belleville (Ill.) rounded out the top three qualifiers in his 1976 March.

Sears Point Raceway will host main events in nine divisions on Sunday. The feature races begin at 12:45 p.m., culminating late in the afternoon with the Historic Grand Prix featuring Vintage Formula One race cars final.
