Shane Lewis takes Sebring HSR endurance victory.

SEBRING, Fla., March 2, 2003 -- Shane Lewis, of Jupiter, Florida, won his second consecutive Historic SportsCar Racing (HSR) Rolex Historic Enduro today at Sebring International Raceway. The three-hour GTP/ Camel Lights event, which brings back the cars from IMSA's 'golden age' of the 1980s and '90s, is one of the HSR's most celebrated races. Lewis dominated qualifying on Saturday, winning the pole position in the #65 Chevrolet-powered Spice chassis and led today's event until the first round of pit stops. Following the stop at the end of the first hour, a faulty wheel bearing forced Lewis' car-- the same one he used to win here in 2002-- out of competition. He then stepped immediately into Turner Racing's second entry, the #49 Acura-powered car that won the 1991Camel Lights Championship. The six-time starter of the 12 Hours of Sebring quickly got the car up to speed and began to cut through the field. He would take the lead in a stirring battle on the final lap after driving for nearly the full event. Despite piloting the car against higher horsepower GTP-class entries, Lewis was able to take both the class and overall win for owners Ron Ciaravella and Mark Pritch.

"I am still a little stunned," remarked Lewis from a champagne soaked victory lane. "I wasn't expecting this to be the car I would be celebrating the victory with. This Acura Spice is an amazing car but we had a horsepower disadvantage to all of the GTP cars. We were just racing for all this Acura was worth. When the guys got on the radio and told me I was 'position one' I called back; 'in class, right?' They said 'no, overall!' I couldn't believe it. It was just an awesome race. I definitely want to thank Mark, Ron and Turner Racing for giving me a great opportunity in two awesome race cars. I also want to thank Roger Mandeville and Jeff Kline. They did a spectacular job."

Shane Lewis is a multi-time race winner in IMSA, SCCA Pro and Grand-Am sanctioned events. In 2002, he competed in the GS I and GS II classes of the Grand-Am Cup winning at Phoenix and in-class twice, including the Daytona season-finale. In 2003, he is racing a Mini Cooper S for Nuzzo Motorsports in the Grand-Am Cup's ST I class. The popular Lewis is also a regular on the American Le Mans Series where he has earned multiple podiums and top-five finishes. He is a veteran of 16 24-hour races including two 24 Hours of Le Mans and six Rolex 24 at Daytona. He has raced six times in the 12 Hours of Sebring and four times in the Petit Le Mans.
