Vintage Stock Cars Find A Home At Daytona Too

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., (Nov. 2, 2001) -- Sportscars aren't the only racing machines turning laps during this weekend's Manheim's Daytona Auto Auction Presents The Brumos Continental Historics and Grand-Am Finale at Daytona International Speedway.

Restored, vintage stock cars from the Historic Stock Car Racing Association are also camped out at the Speedway and will compete on the 3.56-mile road course on Sunday at 1 p.m. All stock cars must be NASCAR legal and built 1994 or earlier.

Most of the stock cars come from Gene Felton Restorations based in Roswell, Ga. Felton, a four-time IMSA champion and frequent winner at Daytona, will drive the No. 40 Kendall Pontiac, formerly driven by Kenny Wallace. He won last year's historic stock car feature race at Daytona.

"We're going fast and having a good time," said Felton, who has a class victory in the 1984 Rolex 24 At Daytona with two-time NASCAR Winston Cup champion Terry Labonte and Billy Hagan.

Guests at the Speedway will recognize many of Felton's stock cars, which include Davey Allison's No. 28 Texaco-Havoline Ford and the No. 1 Skoal Ford of Rick Mast.

"You name it and we got one of them," said Felton, whose stock cars will turn laps at Daytona in the 150-160 mph range.

Other notable cars in the field include Rusty Wallace's No. 2 Miller Geniune Draft Ford Thunderbird , the No. 5 Levi-Garrett Chevrolet of Ricky Rudd, the No. 6 Valvoline Ford of Mark Martin and Dale Jarrett's No. 18 Interstate Batteries Chevrolet, which won the 1993 Daytona 500.

Before their feature race on Sunday at 1 p.m., the vintage stock cars will have a qualifying race on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and a practice session at 4:55 p.m.

Tickets for this weekend's Manheim's Daytona Auto Auction Presents The Brumos Continental Historics and the Grand-Am Finale can be purchased at the gate or by calling the Speedway ticket office at (386) 253-7223.
