August 17
DeWayne Louis "Tiny" Lund dies in an accident during the NASCAR
Talledega 500 stock car race. Buddy Baker won the race in a Bud Moore
Ford (1975).
August 18
Stirling Moss, driving a Vanwall, wins the Pescara Grand Prix in
Pescara, Italy (1957).
August 19
Darran Lindsay wins the 250cc motorcycle race during the Ulster Grand
Prix in Ireland (2006).
August 20
Walt Hansgen wins the SCCA National sports car race at Indianapolis
Raceway Park in Indiana driving a Maserati Tipo 61 (1961).
August 21
Jackie Stewart and Andy Buchanan drive a Ferrari 250LM to victory in
the Surfer's Paradise 12 hour race in Queensland, Australia (1966).
August 22
Juan Pablo Montoya wins the CART Target Grand Prix at the Chicago Motor
Speedway in Cicero, Illinois, USA (1999).
Correction: Last week's entry for August 15 had 2 errors in it. George Follmer was driving a Porsche-powered Lotus 23, not a Ford-powered Lotus 70 at Continental Divide in 1965. In addition, his was a class win, as the overall victory went to Hap Sharp in a Chaparral.
