Al Unser Jr. beats Scott Goodyear by .043 seconds for the win in the
closest finish in Indianapolis 500 history. Lynn St. James, the second
woman to race in the Indy 500, finishes 11th and is named race Rookie of
the Year (1992).
May 25
Jochen Rindt, driving a Lotus 69, wins the second heat of the Alcoa
Trophy F2 race at Crystal Palace in London, England (1970).
May 26
Stu Hayner and Roger Schramm drive a Chevrolet Camaro to victory in the
PSR Exxon Supreme GT1 race at Lime Rock, Connecticut, USA (1997).
May 27
The 1498cc Lotus-Ford Twin Cam engine makes its race debut in a Lotus
23 sports car during the Nurburgring 1000km race (1962).
May 28
Charlie Collier rides a JAP-powered Matchless to victory in the first
motorcycle TT held on the Isle of Man (1907).
May 29
Vitorio Brambilla and Spartico Dini drive an Alfa Romeo T33/SC/12 to
victory in the World Sportscar Race at Vallelunga, Italy (1977).
May 30
George Bailey is the first man to drive a mid-engined car in the
Indianapolis 500. His Miller starts sixth but does not finish. Wilbur
Shaw wins the race in a Maserati (1939).
