Brock Yates, Brock Yates Jr., Jim Williams, and Steve Smith, in a Dodge
van named "Moon Trash II", begin the first Cannonball Baker
Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash. They will travel from New York
City to Redondo Beach, California, in 40 hours and 51 minutes (1971).
May 4
Derek Bell and Henri Pescarolo drive an Alfa Romeo T33/TT/12 to victory
in the 1000K (shortened to 750K because of bad weather) sports car race
at Spa, Belgium (1975).
May 5
Vic Elford and Umberto Maglioli drive a Porsche 907 to victory in the
Targa Florio in Sicily (1968).
May 6
Juan Manuel Fangio II wins the IMSA GTP race at Heartland Park in
Topeka, Kansas, USA, driving an Eagle-Toyota MkII to its maiden victory
(1990).

Mark Blundell wins the Formula Ford race at Snetterton, England,
driving a Lola (1984).

Gilles Villeneuve dies in a accident during practice before the Belgian

1930s racing great Manfred von Brauchtisch is arrested in West Germany
"on suspicion of preparing an act of high treason." He will flee to East
Germany before his trial can begin (1953).
