Watkins Glen historic NASCARS

Watkins Glen, NY (June 27, 2001) - It is very rare to see the same car that won the Daytona 500 running a race at Watkins Glen International. In these days of extreme precision in chassis set-up, the cars for the two tracks are completely different. However, several cars will be breaking the rules, including Dale Jarrett's Daytona 500 winning Interstate Batteries Chevy Lumina, and taking the left and right turns of the historic road course during the Festival of Speed & Sound weekend, July 6-8.

Jarrett, a three-time Daytona 500 winner, drove this car to his very first victory in NASCAR's biggest event in 1993. Driven by Gary Jordan of Wellington, OH, it is one of a record 35 historic stock cars entered in the weekend's Historic Stock Car Racing Association event on Sunday morning. Also making appearances at The Glen are cars once driven by Richard Petty, Bobby Allison and the late Dale Earnhardt and Neil Bonnett.

Rick Mast's pole-winning car for the inaugural Brickyard 400 in 1994 will take to the 2.45-mile road course with Gordon Sprague in the driver's seat. The 1993 Skoal Ford Thunderbird was part of Mast's best year in Winston Cup racing, finishing 18th in the points with nine top-10 finishes.

Several top road racing cars are on the entry list, including Ernie Irvan's 1989 Kodak Chevy Lumina. Irvan drove this car to victory at Sears Point in 1992 and finished second at Watkins Glen the same year. The car, now driven by Dick Mooney, will look to continue its success at the historic road course on July 8.

Finally, the only car Lake Speed ever took to Victory Circle will make an appearance at The Glen. The 1987 Wynn's/Kmart/Delco Battery Oldsmobile Cutlass took the checkered flag in the 1988 TranSouth 500 at Darlington Raceway and will take to The Glen with Dave Carlson behind the wheel.

The Glen presents an unsurpassed NASCAR weekend July 6-8. The Festival of Speed & Sound promises to be a weekend packed with racing action as the ARCA RE/MAX Series takes to the historic road course in its inaugural race at The Glen on Saturday, followed by a concert by Blessid Union of Souls and a Winston Cup Pepsi 400 viewing party on the jumbotrons live from Daytona International Speedway. The NASCAR Busch Series takes center stage on Sunday as the highlight of the weekend's activities in the GNC Live Well 200, complemented by a historic stock car race in the morning.
