Watkins Glen, NY (August 25, 1999) - Speedvision, one of motorsports' fastest growing television networks, will be expanding coverage of this year's Zippo U.S. Vintage Grand Prix to 60 minutes. The new expanded coverage will allow for more detailed coverage of the September 10 - 12 weekend at The Glen and will include feature stories on the IKEPOD Grand Prix Festival held in downtown Watkins Glen and a segment on the new Watkins Glen Motor Racing Research Library. The Zippo U.S. Vintage Grand Prix is scheduled to air on the Speedvision network over Thanksgiving weekend in late November. "The Zippo U.S. Vintage Grand Prix has built a history of great vintage racing at Watkins Glen, and that reputation for vintage racing is gaining national attention," said Bryan Sperber, Watkins Glen president. "We're very excited to have Speedvision as a part of our Zippo Vintage weekend. With the help of Speedvision and the event sponsor, Zippo, vintage race fans from around the country can enjoy the classic cars running in the U.S. Vintage Grand Prix." Lingner Group Productions, with lead producer John Sifferlen, will be handling the production for Speedvision. "This is our first time producing the event for Speedvision and we are excited to see the coverage grow from 30 to 60 minutes," said Sifferlen. "Our goal is to capture the flavor and history of Watkins Glen International by showcasing the fantastic vintage racing action on track and in the community with the IKEPOD Grand Prix Festival." Dave Despain, Bob Akin, and Derek Daly are scheduled to provide the on-air talent for the weekend. Akin, a long-time competitor in Sports Car racing, along with Despain will be providing most of the on-air coverage and analysis. Derek Daly will be providing race analysis for Sunday's feature event, an IMSA GTP race set to begin at 1:10 p.m. 1999 marks Zippo's seventh year as the title sponsor for the U.S. Vintage Grand Prix at Watkins Glen. "During the last seven years with Watkins Glen, Zippo has watched the U.S. Vintage Grand Prix become one of the country's premier vintage road racing events," said Zippo President, Mike Schuler. "We're thrilled that our association with Watkins Glen has become so successful." As part of the weekend's celebration, the Village of Watkins Glen will be hosting the 1999 Grand Prix Festival in the historic downtown area, featuring a re-enactment of the original Grand Prix run on the original 6.6 mile course.
