Along with teammates Timo Bernhard and Brendon Hartley, former Formula 1 star Webber secured a fourth straight FIA WEC win at Shanghai and ensured that Porsche took the manufacturers’ crown with one round remaining.

“I’ve been involved in some pretty big projects but this achievement is incredible,” said Webber after the race.

“To come in to this level of racing and get the results we have had, to produce these types of cars and this kind of performance week-in and week-out, it is really hard.

“Everyone at Weissach and everyone involved in the program from the start have had a great interpretation of the regulations and we have stuck to our guns.

"It is a big, big thing for Porsche, great for the brand and, for us guys, it’s a real blast.”

Response to Audi risks key to wins

Webber believes that Porsche's adaptability in covering Audi’s strategy calls over the last two races has been a key factor in sealing the title.

“Our mentality in our team over the last few races is that we have been on the high ground and Audi have been shooting up at us from lower valleys and have had to take bigger risks," Webber said.

"They’ve rolled the dice and they are more than capable of doing that, so we just react when we need to.

“Andreas [Seidl, Porsche team boss], this guy, well what he does with the guys in the team week in and week out is a bloody impressive effort so well done to him."

Webber, Bernhard and Hartley are now targeting the drivers’ crown at the FIA WEC finale in Bahrain on November 21.

They lead the Audi trio of Andre Lotterer, Benoit Treluyer and Marcel Fassler by 12 points.
