Danny Wood to Join World of Outlaws By Richard Day NORMAN, OK (January 12) - Danny Wood, a three-time runner-up with the American Sprint Car Series, announced Wednesday he will race for the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year award in 2000. "Racing with the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series has been our goal for a long time," Wood said. "I've been driving for Donnie Woodburn for the last few years and we've decided to go ahead and do it. We had some good runs last year when we ran with the Outlaws, so we're going to move on up. I really look forward to running with the best in the world." Wood drove Woodburn's #21W Pepsi Avenger past 14 sprinters to finish 10th in the Winter Nationals' championship feature at Devil's Bowl Speedway last October. He finished sixth in the Second Preliminary Feature at the Amoco Knoxville Nationals. Wood has also raced for Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series car owner Junior Holbrook. "There's going to be a big learning curve, but we're ready to do it," Wood said. "Everybody keeps telling me, 'the travel is going to kill you.' Well, that won't be a problem for me because I drove trucks for a long time. I'm used to sitting in trucks 15-16 hours and driving 900 to 1,000 miles a day. That's not a problem. "We're just going to have to stay focused. There are plenty of race tracks to learn. When we ran at I-80 Speedway (in the Channellock Fall Classic last September), I had never seen that track before, and we came from 24th and was up to sixth at one point." Wood patterns the race team after Sammy Swindell's. He has a crew, but no crew chief, and makes all the decisions concerning the car. WoO
