Jac Haudenschild Dominates Eldora Clash By Richard Day ROSSBURG, OH (July 17) - Six weeks ago, when Jac Haudenschild suffered a shoulder injury and Jack Elden lost his crew chief, it appeared all was lost for the Pennzoil team. The wounds healed quickly when Haudenschild returned the "Banzai" Bruns-prepared #22 Pennzoil Maxim to victory lane on the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series tour, however. "The team has done a great job of sticking together and Jac has done a wonderful job of driving the last month," Elden said Friday after Haudenschild led all 30 laps to win the Second Annual Eldora Clash at Eldora Speedway. TNN: The Nashville Network televised the action live on its Motor Madness program. The victory, Haudenschild's sixth of the year, tied his season-best total set in 1989. "The Pennzoil car was running really good," Jac said. "I have to thank Jack and Carol Elden for giving me such a good race car and the good Lord above for making it all possible. "You have to hand it to the crews on every one of these teams. It's unbelievable to me how many hours they put in. We have three guys on our crew and they all work really hard. "We qualified bad, but we got lucky when a couple of guys couldn't make it so we got to start up front in the dash. We just hope things go as smoothly tomorrow night as they did tonight." Haudenschild, the eighth-fastest qualifier in the 47-car field, received the luxury of starting the Channellock Dash on the pole when faster qualifiers Danny Lasoski and Kenny Jacobs failed to qualify for the "A" Feature through their Racing Champions Heat Races. Jac won the five-lap race for the right to start the main event on the pole. Jac burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the "A" Feature, and opened a seven-car-length advantage within four laps. He entered lapped traffic three laps later. Sammy Swindell, who won the World of Outlaws' first two races at Eldora this season, drove his #1 Channellock Stealth past Stevie Smith, Steve Kinser and Frankie Kerr during the opening lap to take over third place. He battled Andy Hillenburg for 12 laps before taking the low line through the first and second corners to claim the runner-up spot early in lap 13. Haudenschild broke out of lapped traffic midway through the race and opened a 15-car-length advantage. Swindell narrowed the gap to 10 car-lengths within three laps. A collision involving Danny Lasoski and Daryn Pittman caused Lasoski to stop the #83 Beef Packers Eagle on the back stretch during lap 20, setting up a 10-lap dash to the checkered flag. With a lapped car lining up between Haudenschild and Swindell on the ensuing restart, Jac started building a comfortable lead again. He was six car-lengths ahead of Sammy when he caught the backmarkers again with 4 1/2 laps remaining and took the checkered flag with 1.47 seconds to spare. "The race track was perfect tonight," Haudenschild said. "It had three or four grooves, and you could move all over it. Earl (Baltes) couldn't have had the track much better. "My crew told me Sammy was second on the restart, so I knew he would keep up with me. "I know there are a lot of people here from Millersburg and Wooster (Ohio towns where Haudenschild has lived). I hope I put on a good show for them and the national TV audience tonight." Hillenburg finished third, ahead of Kinser, Smith, Mark Kinser, 15th-starting Dale Blaney, Jacobs, Jeff Shepard and Kerr. Swindell received the Vivarin Fast-Time Award for pacing the qualifying session with a 13.100-second, 138.451-m.p.h. lap around the high-banked, 1/2-mile oval. Jeff Swindell was 1.738 seconds off his brother's pace and the 40th-fastest qualifier. He won the "C" Feature and finished seventh in the "B" before taking a provisional and starting a backup car at the rear of the main event. Jeff raced into 12th place in the "A" Feature.
