* There's an all-new challenge facing the Pennzoil World of Outlaws this week: the Bristol Motor Speedway half-mile. The track, known as one of the most popular venues on the NASCAR Winston Cup circuit, has been covered by 1,400 tons of red clay for the Outlaws. * Goodyear will bring more than 400 tires to Bristol Motor Speedway for the Outlaws in several compounds and sizes. The new track will force the teams to consider tire selection very carefully before heading to the track, so teams will have several sets of tires mounted and will make quick decisions based on their personal laps and observing racers in other heats. Goodyear engineers will provide assistance and expertise, but the final decision is with the racer. * The Bristol dirt track will be unlike any other track the Outlaws have seen, but the most prominent feature will be the banking. Bristol is banked at 36 degrees for the Winston Cup, but the dirt has leveled that to approximately 23 degrees. "Eldora is similar because it is also banked, but Bristol is significantly steeper," says Paul Lauritzen, Goodyear's operations manager for sprint/dirt racing. "The cars and the tires will be facing challenges not seen at any other track. "The banking helps the cars go through the corners faster because the lateral g-forces push the car into the track rather than off the track," said Lauritzen. "It's equally difficult on the left-side tires and the right side tires. One way to counter the stresses the banking places on the tire is to add air pressure, which makes the tire stiffer and keeps the car off the bumps. Increased air pressure also doesn't allow the tire to slide on its tread and create unnecessary heat build-up, which can shorten the life of a tire." * A few Outlaws drivers tested the Bristol circuit in May, with Goodyear racer Sammy Swindell recording the fastest time, a 13.60-second, 141.088-mph lap. That mark is more than 1.5 seconds faster than Steve Park's Winston Cup track record. * Bristol is expecting a crowd of approximately 45,000 for this weekend, making it the largest crowd to see an Outlaws event. "Racing the Outlaws at these new venues, such as Bristol, Lowe's and Texas, in front of large crowds and national television audiences is such a boost to sprint car racing in this country," Lauritzen says. "Goodyear is proud to be a part of the World of Outlaws series and the fantastic growth in popularity the sport is enjoying. * Goodyear is currently riding a hot streak in the World of Outlaws, having won 14 of the past 19 preliminary and feature races. Goodyear racers have won every "A" main over the past two weeks, including Lowe's Motor Speedway (Swindell and Mark Kinser), Lebanon Valley (Swindell), Rolling Wheels (Stevie Smith) and Eldora (Mark Kinser).
