World of Outlaws: Goodyear racers continued their recent domination with two victories in three nights in the 48th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif.
Jeff Shepard broke the 13-year-old qualifying record for the quarter-mile facility on the first night, zipping around the track in just 11.477 seconds, averaging 78.418 mph. Shepard set the record and later won the preliminary feature on the recently developed Goodyear D-1422 right rear tire.
The win was Shepard's fourth in a nine race string.
Stevie Smith, also racing on the D-1422 won the preliminary feature the following night. Donny Schatz finished fifth in that race and Dale Blaney took ninth.
On the final night, Shepard finished second on the D-1422. Schatz was fourth, Smith finished fifth and Shaffer took seventh. Smith led the race with 10 laps remaining, when a shock absorber on his car broke.
