Kinser Passes Swindell to Win Grays Harbor Finale By Richard Day ELMA, WA (August 21) - Mark Kinser's perseverance closely resembles that of the Mopar sprint car racing program. Kinser, like the Mopar engine, showed flashes of brilliance early in his career. Mark went from car owner to car owner in search of the right combination. Gary Stanton, who brought Mopar to sprint car racing three years ago, never found the right driver to go with the powerful engine. When they started working with 15-time Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series champion car owner and crew chief Karl Kinser, their problems vanished. Mark, the leader in the point standings and the series' 1996 champion, continued to make the Mopar team shine Saturday in the "A" Feature at Grays Harbor Raceway Park. He chased Preliminary Feature winner Sammy Swindell for 26 3/4 laps before taking the lead. His 18th main event victory of the season increased his advantage to 130 points over Danny Lasoski. "The Mopar car felt great," Mark said. "I was just trying to make consistent laps. My crew's done a great job through this whole swing. There's not a lot of time, but they've given me a great car every night. My hat's off to them." Kinser, who passed Tim Shaffer and cousin Steve Kinser during the last lap to finish second in Friday's Preliminary Feature, earned the right to start the "A" Feature outside the front row by running second in the Channellock Dash. Swindell's fifth Channellock Dash victory of the season gave him the pole in the main event. Swindell burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the "A" Feature, only to have Randy Tiner and Third NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Brooke Tatnell collide on the back straightaway. Tiner spun and stopped, bringing out the caution flag. Swindell took the lead again on the complete restart. Randy Hannagan, who started inside the third row, had problems on the back stretch and the #1x NetTaxi Hurricane slid into the infield. Hannagan was in 23rd place by the time he returned to the racing surface. Chad Hillier brought out the second caution flag when he stopped in turn four with a flat right rear tire late in lap two. Tiner and Dale Smith in the second corner tangled as the race resumed. Kinser kept pace with Swindell as the green flag replaced the yellow, and raced wheel-to-wheel with him in turn two early in the sixth lap. Swindell was one car-length ahead when they entered lapped traffic two laps later. Kinser made similar runs at Sammy in the fourth corner during the 10th and 11th laps, but was unable to drive the #5M Mopar Maxim into first place. Tiner slowed in turn two the next time around. Jay Cole collided with Tiner and spun into Smith, Hillier and Steve Kinser, who was in fifth place. Dale Blaney, the Vivarin Fast-Time Award winner during both programs at Grays Harbor, surrendered fourth place when he joined "The King of the Outlaws" in the pits for repairs. Blaney received a new right rear tire and Kinser a new front axle before they restarted the race at the back of the pack. Swindell controlled the ensuing restart and was two car-lengths ahead of Mark when he caught the backmarkers again during lap 16. He increased his advantage to six car-lengths within four laps. Kinser caught Sammy late in the 26th lap, then took the lead with an inside move in the fourth corner one lap later. Swindell kept pace with Mark through lap 28 and almost regained first place deep in the fourth corner. The strong Mopar engine took control during the next three laps as Kinser opened a half-straightaway advantage. Swindell drove his #1 Channellock Stealth down the back stretch as Mark took the checkered flag. Shaffer, whose crew replaced the power plant in the #11H Vivarin Eagle between the Channellock Dash and the main event, finished in third place. Lasoski crossed the finish line third, ahead of Stevie Smith, Johnny Herrera, Kevin Gobrecht, 14th-starting Andy Hillenburg, Jeff Swindell and Donny Schatz. Schatz was running second in the First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race when the engine in the #15 Parker Stores Maxim lost power. After his crew replaced the engine, the series' 1997 Rookie of the Year he won the "B" Feature and raced into 10th place from inside the seventh row. The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' annual Wild, Wild Northwest Tour continues Monday at Riverside Speedway in Cottage Grove, OR, then climaxes Wednesday at Southern Oregon Speedway in Medford, OR.
