McMahan Grabs Fourth Gumout Victory
By Kendra Jacobs

PEVELY, MO (Sept. 1)-Paul McMahan is proving to himself and to the sprint car racing world that his bad luck is over. While the United Expressline #U2 sprint car team suffered through mechanical failures and unfortunate accidents, they fell over 100 points behind the leader. Now, McMahan is working his way back into striking distance with two wins in two weekends. Last weekend, McMahan stood in Victory Lane at the historic Williams Grove Speedway. Tonight, McMahan found Victory Lane at I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Missouri.

McMahan earned the pole starting position for the 30-lap feature event by winning the Weld Racing Dash. Shane Stewart won the Weld Race Components Dash to start alongside McMahan. McMahan jumped out into the early lead. Craig Dollansky moved to the low side to take second position away from Stewart. Jason Meyers filed into fourth position, followed by Jeff Shepard.

McMahan continued to hold his lead over Dollansky, while Kasey Kahne worked the low side to catch Shepard. By lap five, Randy Kinser had also worked his way into the battle for fifth position. As McMahan approached lapped traffic, Paul May in the black #71M flipped in turn one. McMahan held onto his lead on the restart, while Stewart battled Dollansky for second. Dollansky held onto the position. Shepard got by Meyers going into turn one, but Meyers retaliated in turn two to hold onto the fourth position.

Lap 10 saw McMahan once again enter lapped traffic. Dollansky worked his way onto McMahan's tail before getting behind in lapped traffic. By lap 15, McMahan held a straightaway lead over the current point leader. Dollansky worked his way back up to McMahan on lap 17. Three laps later, McMahan and Dollansky held a ½ lap lead over third running Meyers. After Meyers took the third position from Stewart, he continued to cut down the gap between himself and the leaders.

Kahne worked his way into the top five by passing Shepard on lap 21. Three laps later, Kahne passed Stewart in turns three and four to take over the fourth position. As Meyers approached Dollansky to battle for the second position, Jason Statler spun high in turn four to bring out a caution. Statler restarted on the tail of the field.

With three laps remaining, McMahan took off to win the feature event by ½ straightaway. Dollansky held on to second with Meyers finishing a strong third. Kahne and Stewart rounded out the top five.

Jimmy Carter pushed out to start the "A" Feature, but was forced to pull out during the four abreast due to brake failure.

Jeff Shepard picked up the Huggins Fast Time Award with a time of 10.673. Blake Feese was named KSE Hard Charger after he passed five cars on his way to an eleventh place finish.

The Gumout Racing Series will not compete during the weekend of September 8-10. The series will return to action Saturday, Septemeber 16th at Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, Illinois.
