Dave Moulis Crowned "King of Wisconsin"
By Kendra Jacobs

WILMOT, WI (July 22)-Dave Moulis knows Wilmot Speedway. A former Wilmot Speedway track champion and King of Wisconsin victor, Moulis has won many races there. But no win seemed quite as rewarding as his win tonight over the Gumout Racing Series competitors.

"We won one of the "King of Wisconsin" [races] two years ago. That was a good one. This surpasses that. This was a really good win," Moulis stated in front of an elated crowd.

"I knew Jeff [Shepard] was going to try to go high on me. I just tried to hold my line and stay as calm as possible, and try to run my line as smooth as possible," Moulis said about the events final restart.

Second finishing Jeff Shepard remained on Moulis's tail during the final two laps, but could not make the pass for the win. "He was the fastest car. We made a run at it and passed him a couple of times. It was a good finish in the end. He [Moulis] deserved it."

Just shy of making a clean sweep of the event, Moulis won both the Third Manufacturer's Heat Race and the Weld Racing Dash. Moulis, along with Jason Meyers who won the Weld Race Components Dash, comprised the starting row for the "King of Wisconsin" 40-lap event.

Meyers took the early lead, as fourth starting Craig Dollansky made a charge by both Shepard and Moulis to take over second. Moulis retaliated in turn four to put Dollansky back to third. Shepard filed into fourth position with Kurt Winker holding on to fifth.

The first caution of the night was brought out on lap three as Kim Mock spun low in turn two. Mock rejoined the field on the tail. Meyers held onto his lead at the restart. Dollansky continuously raced along the high side in all efforts of stealing second position from Moulis. Moulis, content on the bottom, held off Dollansky.

By lap five, Moulis was on Meyers' tail. As Moulis built up momentum, Kim Mock brought out the red as he flipped coming out of turn two. Mock was not able to re-start.

Dollansky again ran high on the restart to take second away from Moulis. Moulis, refusing to give-up, took back the position in turn four as Winker took fourth position away from Shepard.

Meyers, by lap seven, had created a ten carlengths lead over Moulis. Brad Furr had closed in on Shepard, hoping to join the top five. Moulis began to pull away from Dollansky, as he set his sights on the leader. Dollansky, Winker, and Shepard began a three-way fight for the third position. Winker earned the position on lap 10, as Moulis found himself on Meyers tail.

Lap twelve saw Meyers and Moulis enter lapped traffic for the first time. Dollansky was put back to fifth position when Shepard passed him high in turn two. The following lap saw Shepard pass Winker in the same corner to take over third. Shepard found his groove along the highside to join Meyers and Moulis in the fight for the lead.

On lap 16, Meyers was forced to change his line and go high around lapped traffic. Moulis saw an open opportunity on the low side and cut by Meyers to take the lead coming out of turn two. Meyers desperately tried to regain the position but held nothing for Moulis. Meyers deciding to duck back to the low groove, was passed by Shepard in turn one. Shepard took over second position, moving Meyers back to third.

Shepard cut Moulis' lead in less than one lap. With Moulis on the bottom and Shepard on top, Shepard worked up enough momentum to take the lead from Moulis on lap 20. Shepard quickly found himself in heavy traffic allowing Moulis to stay close behind.

The yellow flag was dropped on lap 22, as Paul McMahan skidded to a stop on the backstretch with a flat right rear tire. The United Expressline crew was able to change the tire and restart on the tail. Shepard and Moulis pulled away from the pack on the restart. Moulis, running a fine line along the bottom, closed the small gap between himself and the leader. On lap 28, Moulis took the lead coming out of turn four, as Winker moved by Meyers for third. Meyers continuously moved back as both Dollansky and Furr charge by moving Meyers into sixth position.

Moulis effortlessly moved through lapped traffic. Shepard continued to struggle with lapped cars giving Moulis a straightaway lead on lap 36. Lap 37, brought out another yellow as Brian Carlson in the Lincoln Welders #18, spun between turns one and two. With three laps remaining, Moulis jumped out into a big lead on the restart. Furr took fourth position away from Dollansky. Shepard gained ground on the race leader, but he appeared to be running out of time.

As Moulis rounded turn four to take the checkered, Ronald Laney and Darrell Dodd tangled high in turn one. Both drivers were uninjured. The race was not checkered due to the accident happening before Moulis crossed the flagstand.

With the accident cleared from the racing surface, the field re-lined for the final restart. As Moulis filed in behind the pace vehicle his left rear was obviously flat. Moulis made all efforts to retain the little air that was left in his tire. There were no lapped cars between he and Shepard this time. As the green dropped, Shepard again charged to the high side. Moulis remained on the bottom hoping to hold off Shepard. Crossing beneath the white flag, Moulis still held the lead with Shepard close behind. Exiting turn four for the final time, Moulis held off Shepard's attempt at victory to win the Gumout Racing Series "A" Feature event by ½ of a car. Shepard finished second, followed by Winker, Furr and Dollansky.

Shane Stewart earned his second Huggins Fast Qualifier Award with a time of 13.946. The Frankland Hard Luck Award was given to Ronald Laney, due to his last lap accident with Dodd. Brad Furr was named KSE Hard Charger for his move from eighth to fourth.

Bob Bennett and Brian Carlson both used provisionals to create a 26-car field.

The Gumout Racing Series will compete next in Oskaloosa, Iowa on Monday, August 7th, for the fetch-O-matic Front Row Challenge.
