'King of the Outlaws' Takes Nationals Tuneup By Richard Day KNOXVILLE, IA (July 19) -- Back in 1995, when Steve Kinser last won the Amoco Knoxville Nationals, he also won the Marion County Fair event at Knoxville Raceway on July 19th. "The King of the Outlaws" took the first step toward repeating that feat Wednesday, passing Stevie Smith during the 21st lap on his way to winning the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Feature. "We've been running well all year long," Kinser said. "It feels good to win one here. We haven't won here in quite a while." The $10,000 victory, Kinser's sixth of the season, gave him a 177- point advantage over his cousin, defending series and Nationals champion Mark Kinser. Steve has won 30 Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Features at Knoxville Raceway, including 11 Amoco Knoxville Nationals championships. Kinser, the ninth-fastest qualifier in the 48-car field, won the First NAPA AUTO PARTS Heat Race and earned the right to start the "A" Feature outside the front row by finishing second in the CHANNELLOCK Dash. Stevie Smith passed Craig Dollansky, Kinser and Johnny Herrera to win his eighth dash of the season. Smith, who won the Iowa Ethanol Classic at Knoxville Raceway July 1st, drove his #19 Ingersoll-Rand Black Bandit into the lead as the green flag fell in the 25-lap main event. Danny Lasoski raced past Kinser on the front straightaway, then took the inside line through turns one and two to pass Sammy Swindell for second place. Smith and Kinser raced in the high groove while Lasoski hugged the inside berm in the race's early stages. Stevie later dropped to the inside in turns three and four. The Kinser cousins exchanged fourth place during laps three and four before "The King of the Outlaws" passed Swindell high on the back stretch for third. Steve Gennetton's turn-three spin opened the track ahead of the leaders late in the sixth lap. Lasoski and Kinser challenged Smith as the green flag replaced the yellow. The leaders raced three-abreast through turn four as they headed for the finish line the next time around, with Smith narrowly winning a front-straightaway drag race. "The King" and "The Dude" passed each other for second place four times during the eighth and ninth laps before Kinser claimed the position with a high move in the second corner one lap later. Smith was 1.33 seconds ahead of Kinser when they entered lapped traffic midway through the race. Dale Blaney lost seventh place late in lap 14 when he took the #93 Amoco Maxim for a spin in turn four. The Kings Royal champion tangled with fellow Ohioan Dean Jacobs in the fourth corner on the restart. Kinser passed Smith deep in turn two as the race resumed, only to have Stevie regain the lead with a similar move in the fourth corner. Vivarin Fast-Time Award winner Donny Schatz jumped the cushion in turn one and flipped early in lap 16, bringing out the red flag. Schatz also crashed with Tim Shaffer while battling for third place during the First NAPA AUTO PARTS Heat Race, then won the "B" Feature. "The King of the Outlaws" chased Smith for 4 1/2 laps after the restart, then steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim to the lowest point between turns three and four to take the lead. He was .4 seconds ahead of Smith when he caught the backmarkers two laps later. Kinser steadily increased his advantage while Lasoski challenged Smith for second place during the final couple of laps, and took the checkered flag with 2.2 seconds to spare. "We started getting around the bottom of (turns) three and four late in the race," Steve said. "I actually went down there one time to block Danny. It stuck pretty good, so we just stayed there. It started getting wet out there toward the end. I spun the tires badly on the last lap. I don't know what that was all about, but we managed to get her in here (victory lane)." Swindell finished fourth, ahead of Second NAPA AUTO PARTS Heat Race winner Herrera, 15th-starting Andy Hillenburg, Mark Kinser, Greg Hodnett, Joey Saldana and Jac Haudenschild. Schatz received his third Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the year for pacing the qualifying session with a 117.333-m.p.h. lap around the legendary semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval. The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series will sanction the 40th Annual Amoco Knoxville Nationals August 9-12. TNN will televise the August 12th race live, beginning at 10 p.m. EDT. The MTV Networks subsidiary will also air a Nationals preview show, starting at 9 p.m. EDT.
