Third Time is Charm for Kinser at Memphis By Richard Day MEMPHIS, TN (July 26) - After a couple of near misses, the third time proved to be the charm for Mark Kinser at Memphis Motorsports Park. Kinser was leading the World of Outlaws' April Fools Day race when the #5M Wirtgen Maxim hooked the berm in lapped traffic. Then, when the Skoal Outlaw Series returned to the semi-banked, 3/8-mile oval June 17th, Mark set quick-time and finished third in the main event. Mark was the class of the 34-car field Wednesday night. He earned his 15th EcoWater Fast-Time Award of the year with a 13.750-second qualifying run. After winning the First Snap-on Tools Heat Race, Mark started the "A" Feature on the second row. He took the lead during the fifth lap and led the final 25 1/2 laps for his 10th victory of the year. "I had a good race car tonight," Mark said following the second victory of his career in Memphis. "I have a great crew. Everybody knows I'm racing for my dad. He's never driven a race car, but he has a knack for telling you where to drive on the race track. That's a big help." Kinser didn't really need any help Wednesday. He was more than .4 seconds faster than anybody else in time trials. Mark passed Andy Hillenburg for third while Vivarin Dash winner Mike Ward took the lead from the pole in the "A" Feature. Stevie Smith passed Ward for first place deep in turn four late in the opening lap. Two laps later, mechanical problems forced Ward to stop in the second corner while Rickey Hood stalled in turn three. Kinser caught Smith soon after the green flag replaced the yellow, and took the lead with a low move into the second corner midway through the fifth lap. Mark was racing away from the field when a mechanical problem forced Danny Lasoski to stop the #77 Cornwell Tools J&J in turn two the next time around. Hillenburg steered his #2 STP J&J deep into the fourth corner to pass Smith for the runner-up spot as the race resumed. Kinser caught the backmarkers during the 10th lap, and extended his advantage to a full straightaway by lap 20. Memphis' Greg Hodnett was in fourth place when the engine in the #8TW Kele & Associates Maxim lost power with nine laps remaining. With five lapped cars restarting between him and Hillenburg, Kinser quickly opened a comfortable lead as the race resumed. Hillenburg was battling Smith to retain the runner-up spot with seven laps remaining when he suffered a flat left rear tire. A broken drive line on the #1 Hooters Gambler put Sammy Swindell in the pits during the caution period. Randy Hannagan brought out the red flag, setting up a two-lap dash to the checkered flag, when he hooked the berm in the third corner and flipped late in the 28th lap. At the same time, Lance Blevins allowed his family's #21L Citgo J&J to slide over the bank in turn four. Two backmarkers separated the leaders on the restart, giving Mark the opportunity to race away his closest pursuers. Memphis' Jeff Swindell steered the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim deep into turn four to pass Smith for the runner-up spot as the green flag replaced the red. Jac Haudenschild passed Stevie early in the white-flag lap, but Smith drove the #71M EcoWater Maxim back into third place in the second corner. Jeff was racing into turn four as Kinser took the checkered flag. Skoal Outlaw Series point standings leader Dave Blaney raced into fifth place from outside the eighth row. Rounding out the top 10 in the "A" Feature were Bobby Davis, Jr., Hillenburg, Keith Kauffman, Lasoski and Second Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Jerrod Hull. Kauffman received his first Wells Lamont Hard Charger Award of the year for racing into eighth place from his 10th-row starting position. It was Kauffman's third top-10 finish in as many World of Outlaws events since taking the reins of the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim.
