Outlaws Change Race Format, Expand Channellock Dash By Richard Day

PLANO, TX (January 14) - The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series will change its racing format and expand the Channellock Dash for the 2000 season, series Founder and President Ted Johnson announced Friday. Having two 10-car Channellock Dash races and aligning each by the heat race finishes will give drivers an extra chance to improve their position in the "A" Feature. The First Channellock Dash finish will determine the inside row of the feature race, while the outside row will line up according to the finish in the Second Channellock Dash. "We're extremely pleased with the expanded format for the Channellock Dash and its increased importance in determining qualifying positions for the series' "A" Feature races," Scott Jonap, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Channellock, said. "We think the fans will enjoy the change and the exciting racing that will result as the series' top drivers battle wheel-to-wheel through the Channellock Dash races en route to a top qualifying spot." The new format calls for every car to take two qualifying laps, with the fastest time being used to align the cars in four heat races. The three fastest cars will be inverted in each heat race, with the remaining cars being lined up by their times. The cars finishing 1-5 in the first heat race will make up the inside row of the First Channellock Dash. The outside row of the First Channellock Dash will be filled by the first five finishers in the third heat race. The Second Channellock Dash will be aligned accordingly - the inside row for the cars finishing 1-5 in the second heat race and the first five finishers from the fourth heat race making up the outside row. The "B" Feature will line up by qualifying times. The cars finishing 1-4 in the "B" Feature will tag the rear of the main event. "In addition to the format change, Channellock is also planning to more closely involve the fans via promotional support," Jonap said. "We will announce the exciting details of The Channellock Race To Vegas Sweepstakes soon. It's looking like a great new year for Channellock and the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series."
