Herrera Cuts Mark Kinser Off at 'The PAS' By Richard Day

LAKE PERRIS, CA (February 20) - Johnny Herrera joined Craig Cormack's and Dale Orth's Networks racing team during the off-season with the understanding he would race for the Knoxville Raceway championship unless he could compete with the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' front-runners.

Herrera made a resounding plea to stay with the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series Saturday when he snapped Mark Kinser's seven-feature winning streak with an $8,000 victory at Perris Auto Speedway.

"These guys (Orth and Cormack) planned on running for the Knoxville championship, but I told them I'd win a couple of races before Knoxville starts," Herrera said following the ninth "A" Feature victory of his Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series career. "Maybe I can keep them out here for the full tour.

"They gave me a great car for the feature tonight. We struggled a little bit earlier, but we kept working on the car and it paid off. Last night, I timed eighth-quick and didn't make the Channellock Dash, so I hated the new format. Tonight, I guess I like it a lot more. I can't say enough about Klein engines and Goodyear tires. They really had us hooked up."

Just like Joe Gaerte did Friday when the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series opened its 1999 season at Kings Speedway, Herrera qualified 15th-quick, won the Third NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race and started on the pole in the Channellock Dash. Herrera finished second in the five-lap race behind Fourth NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Terry McCarl.

McCarl drove his #24 McCroskey Chevrolet Twister ahead of the field as the green flag fell in the main event, only to have First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Donny Schatz spin in the fourth corner. Herrera kept pace with McCarl as the race resumed, and was just inches behind when they crossed the finish line at the end of the opening lap. Herrera drove the #1BK Networks Eagle past McCarl as they entered turn one early in the second lap and led the final 29 laps.

Bud Kaeding clipped the wall and flipped in the second corner early in lap four, bringing out the red flag. Tyler Walker lost his 10th-place running position when his crew replaced the flat right rear tire on the #35 Air Sep Maxim during the red period.

Stevie Smith and Danny Lasoski exchanged fifth place during the fifth and sixth laps, before Kinser steered the #5M Mopar Maxim into the low groove between turns three and four to pass McCarl for second the next time around. Second NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Andy Hillenburg relegated McCarl to fourth place early in lap eight.

Herrera was a half-straightaway ahead of Kinser when he entered lapped traffic during the 12th lap. He maintained his comfortable advantage three laps later with a daring move between Walker and Jason Meyers on the back stretch. Kinser was gaining on Herrera the next time around when he collided with a lapped car, breaking the nose wing on the #5M.

Smith drove his #19 Ingersoll-Rand Black Bandit into second place late in the 20th lap, but surrendered the position when he pitted with a flat left rear tire during a 24th-lap caution. A turn-two crash involving Sammy Swindell and Hillenburg brought out the yellow flag.

Herrera controlled the restart and was a half-straightaway ahead of Kinser when he took the checkered flag.

A collision with Jeff Swindell within seconds after the checkered flag fell sent McCarl flipping down the front straightaway. The #24 was destroyed, but McCarl was uninjured in the crash.

Lasoski maintained the lead in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series point standings by finishing in third place. Manufacturers Rookie of the Year candidate Tim Shaffer finished fourth, ahead of defending series champion Steve Kinser, Brent Kaeding, Craig Dollansky, Jeff Swindell, Schatz and "B" Feature winner Dale Blaney.

Lasoski received his second Vivarin Fast-Time Award in as many races for pacing the qualifying session with a 14.895-second, 120.846- m.p.h., lap around Lake Perris' semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval.

The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series is scheduled to run its first double-feature event of the season Friday and Saturday at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix.
