Kinser Wins Second Straight at Rolling Wheels By Richard Day

ELBRIDGE, NY (June 2) - Neither inclement weather nor cousin Steve Kinser could keep Mark Kinser from his appointed rounds Wednesday when the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series invaded Rolling Wheels Raceway. A 70-percent chance of rain threatened the festivities throughout the day. Then a shower caused a 30-minute delay between the NAPA Auto Parts Heat Races and the Channellock Dash, but series officials and Rolling Wheels track personnel worked hard to complete the $45,000 event. Mark, the leader in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series point standings, passed Steve early in the 10th lap and held off hard- charging Donny Schatz for his ninth "A" Feature victory of the season. "I can't believe we got this race in," Mark said. "I didn't think we had a chance. I'd just like to congratulate the whole track crew and all the push truck drivers and heavy equipment operators for giving us a chance to race." Mark opened the series' 27th event of the year by chopping almost a full second off the qualifying standard he set two years ago. He circled the semi-banked, 5/8-mile oval in 16.258 seconds, an average speed of 138.393 m.p.h, and received his 13th Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season. Mark finished third in the First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race, and earned the right to start the 25-lap main event outside the front row by following Steve across the finish line in the Channellock Dash. Mark drove the #5M Mopar Maxim around Steve as the green flag fell in the "A" Feature, only to have George Suprick flip in turn three and force a full restart. Steve took advantage of the break and burst into the lead when the green flag replaced the red. A caution for a second-corner collision involving Joe Gaerte, Lance Blevins and Andy Hillenburg tightened the field three laps later. A broken front axle on the #2 Luxaire J&J kept Hillenburg from restarting. Mark tried to take the lead with an inside move through turns three and four as the race resumed, but was unable to surge ahead. He took the high line into the second corner the next time around, but was unable to pass "The King of the Outlaws." Mark passed Steve deep in turn three late in the eighth lap, but R.C. Faigle's third-corner spin nullified the move. Steve's #11 Quaker State Maxim led the field on the ensuing restart because the caution flag fell before the leaders crossed the finish line. Mark kept pace with Steve as the green flag replaced the yellow, and steered the #5M into the high groove in turn one to take the lead early in the 10th lap. Mark was 15 car-lengths ahead of Steve when he entered lapped traffic three laps later. Schatz, who started outside the fifth row, drove the #15 Parker Stores Maxim past five cars during the first half of the race. Staying in the high groove, the 1997 Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series Rookie of the Year raced around Sammy Swindell early in the 16th lap, then passed First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Kevin Gobrecht four laps later. Donny raced into the runner-up spot with an outside move around Steve Kinser in turn one with 1 3/4 laps remaining. Schatz was racing into the third corner as Mark took the checkered flag. Kinser also won an "A" Feature at Rolling Wheels Raceway on October 10, 1992. "The Mopar car has been really strong here lately," Mark said. "Steve kind of blocked me for a while there, but once we got by him we pretty much had things our way." Schatz' 15th straight top-10 finish - the longest such streak on the tour this season - pushed him past Stevie Smith into fourth place in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series point standings. Steve Kinser finished third, while Tyler Walker passed Gobrecht for fourth place with a high move through turn four as they headed for the checkered flag.
