Sammy Swindell Continues Consistency with Fifth at Devil's Bowl By Ron Anderson

MESQUITE, TX (March 13) -- The competitiveness that drives Sammy Swindell and his #1 Channellock Stealth in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series has never been a question. His ability to look at the big picture allows the Bartlett, TN, driver to accept consistent finishes in the top five. Swindell finished fifth on Saturday night at Devil's Bowl Speedway near Dallas, TX - his fourth consecutive top-five finish in Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series feature races. Swindell followed winner Danny Lasoski, Jac Haudenschild, Joey Saldana and Mark Kinser to the checkered flag at the semi-banked 1/2-mile dirt oval. Swindell qualified the #1 Channellock Stealth sixth in the field of 46 cars. He took advantage of starting on the front row of the Second NAPA AUTO PARTS Heat Race and recorded his third heat race victory of the season. Joey Saldana started on the pole of the First Channellock Dash with Sammy on the outside of row one. At the start, Saldana was slow to take off forcing Swindell to move backward behind Lasoski and next to Kinser. With the race track very fast because of the recent rain, passing was difficult and Swindell finished fourth, earning himself an "A" Feature starting position inside the fourth row. In the 30-lap "A" Feature, Swindell started seventh and quickly moved into the top five battling with defending Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series champion Mark Kinser. The two raced hard, but with the track continuing to be very fast from the weekend's rain, Sammy was unable to get by Kinser and neither driver was able to close in on the top three. "We were pretty much running wide open around the bottom," Swindell said. "It was very difficult to pass, but we were able to move up a couple of spots. There wasn't much room to pass, and Mark never really made a big enough mistake for me to get by." The fifth-place finish allowed Swindell to hold fourth spot in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series standings. With only six nights of racing completed, Swindell knows there is time for the team to improve and remain in contention for the championship. "Everything's working well with the Channellock team," Sammy said. "We're getting a better handle on the car. It's been different from what we thought it was going to be, so we'll continue to work on it. If we keep working hard, I know we'll be where we want to be, and hopefully, we'll be better the next time out." Swindell and his Channellock teammates will return home to Tennessee as the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series takes a week off before racing March 24-25 at Joplin 66 Speedway in Joplin, MO.
