'The Dude' Holds off Kinser to Win Tulsa Event By Richard Day

TULSA, OK (April 23) - Danny Lasoski slowed Mark Kinser's winning ways and spoiled an otherwise sparkling debut by Kevin Gobrecht when the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series invaded Tulsa Speedway Friday.

"The Dude" led the final 11 laps after passing Kinser, who had won three of the last five races, to claim his third "A" Feature victory of the season. Gobrecht, hired to succeed Dale Blaney in the #93 Amoco J&J Wednesday, won the Channellock Dash and finished fourth after leading the first five laps.

"(Car owners) Dennis and Teresa (Roth) flew in from Fresno to see us race and I'm glad we won one for them," Lasoski said. "The big picture is still the points and we know we have to be up front consistently to win the championship."

Lasoski remained three points behind Kinser in their battle for first place in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series point standings. Mark received four extra points for leading the most laps in the race.

Kinser opened the $42,100 event by setting the single-lap record at Tulsa's semi-banked, 3/8-mile oval. His 14.117-second lap sliced .033 seconds off the standard Blaney set on March 27, 1998. Mark was rewarded with his fourth Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season.

Gobrecht, the 14th-fastest qualifier, won the Third NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race and started outside the front row in the Channellock Dash. He beat Donnie Crawford at the drop of the green flag and held off Kinser for the right to start the main event on the pole.

Gobrecht burst into the lead as the "A" Feature started, and Crawford took second place from Kinser late in the opening lap. Kinser returned the favor with a high move into turn four late in lap two.

Crawford turned a 360 and kept going in the second corner early the third lap, and Craig Dollansky, Jimmy Carr, Tim Shaffer and Joe Gaerte crashed trying to avoid him. All four cars turned over, but none of the drivers were injured. Crawford restarted in third place because the red flag fell before the leaders completed the lap.

Joey Saldana brought out the yellow flag soon after the race resumed when he spun in turn two. Paul McMahan pitted during the caution period to replace a flat right rear tire.

Kinser drove the #5M Mopar Maxim to the deepest point between the first and second corners to pass Gobrecht for the lead within seconds after the green flag replaced the yellow. Kevin was trying to regain the lead two laps later when Crawford passed him low in turn two.

Stevie Smith and Lasoski, who started seventh and sixth, respectively, took the low line through the first corner to pass Gobrecht for third and fourth early in lap nine.

Smith steered his #19 Ingersoll-Rand Black Bandit into the high groove in turn two to pass Crawford for second, then "The Dude" used a similar move in turns three and four to take over third place three laps later.

Kinser entered lapped traffic with a six-car-length advantage early in the 16th lap. Seconds later, Lasoski passed Smith for the runner-up spot with a low move into the second corner.

"The Dude" and Smith exchanged second place two laps later, then Lasoski started gaining on Kinser. Lasoski steered the #83 Beef Packers Eagle into the low groove in turn one to take the lead early in the 20th lap.

Smith caught Kinser two laps later and they raced wheel-to-wheel in their pursuit of "The Dude" during the 23rd and 24th laps. They exchanged second place during the 26th lap.

Stevie and Mark were gaining on Lasoski when Smith tried to regain the runner-up spot with a low move through turns one and two the next time around. Kinser tried to pass "The Dude" high in the second corner with a little more than 1 1/2 laps remaining, but was unable to surge ahead. Lasoski took the checkered flag with two car-lengths to spare.

"We figured most of the guys would be running the top, so we had to set the car up to run where they weren't," Lasoski explained. "I knew Mark would be tough here. He's driving Karl Kinser's car, and we really had to work him. We finally got him going too deep into one and came out with the lead.

"It was a wide open track and you could run pretty much any place you wanted to. But when you've got an Eagle race car and a Wesmar engine you know you can run up front."

Smith finished third, ahead of Gobrecht, Gary Wright, Tyler Walker, Andy Hillenburg, Sammy Swindell, Crawford and Johnny Herrera.

Jeff Swindell won the "B" Feature, then drove the #104+ Octane Boost J&J past 11 cars to finish in 13th place. WoO 1999 Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series
