HILLENBURG FULFILLS CONLEY'S PREDICTION, WINS 'GROVE' FEATURE By Richard Day MECHANICSBURG, PA (June 3) - The #2 STP racing team entered Friday's World of Outlaws event at Williams Grove Speedway exuding confidence. "We're going to win tonight," crew chief Donnie "Rooster" Conley crowed when the team arrived at the semi-banked, half-mile oval. Andy Hillenburg made a similar prediction before the Copenhagen-Skoal Shootout event at Devil's Bowl Speedway in March. Now Andy and "Rooster" have perfect race prognostication records. Hillenburg, victim of Steve Kinser's last-lap pass at Grandview Speedway Tuesday, raced past Dave Blaney during the 19th lap and led the final 12 for the $5,200 victory at Williams Grove. "I've really wanted to win here for a long time," Hillenburg told the near-capacity crowd from victory lane. "I didn't think it would happen this soon though. "I used to watch the features from the pits when I wasn't fast enough to make it into the "A," and dreamed of the day I'd win here. It's just great to win one here this soon." Hillenburg's fourth victory of the season came 1 1/2 months sooner than it did in 1993, when he won seven main events. Andy started the 30-lap "A" Feature on the front row, next to Blaney, the Vivarin Dash winner. He fell behind "The Buckeye Bullet" and Jeff Swindell during the main event's opening lap. Blaney drove the #10 Vivarin J&J out to a 12-car-length advantage during the first five laps, and entered lapped traffic four laps later. "The Buckeye Bullet" slowed behind Cliff Brian, allowing Andy to narrow the gap to six car-lengths during the 10th lap. Hillenburg, keeping the #2 in the low groove while Blaney rode the rim, caught the leader 12 laps into the race. Blaney steered the #10 into the low groove in the first corner to maintain the lead the next time around. Blaney approached Bill Brian, Jr., and Dan Dietrich, who were racing side-by-side on the front straightaway, midway through the race. He quickly threaded the #10 between the backmarkers to lengthen his lead to three car- lengths. Blaney padded his cushion to five car-lengths late in the 16th lap when Hillenburg hit the berm deep in the fourth corner, shot across the track and narrowly averted a collision with the outside guard rail. Andy recovered quickly, and reeled in Blaney by the end of the lap. Hillenburg challenged "The Buckeye Bullet" in every corner for two laps, and steered the #2 into the lead high in turn two when the leader dropped into the low groove to block him. The leaders approached heavy lapped late in the 20th lap, but a quick move between Steve Beitler and Joey Kuhn in the fourth corner gave Hillenburg some breathing room. Sammy Swindell was running 13th with nine laps remaining when he collided with Cliff Brian and stopped in turn three. When the race resumed, Jac Haudenschild roared into fourth place, steering the #22 Pennzoil Maxim around Steve Kinser and Jeff Swindell in turns three and four. Bill Brian's fourth-corner spin late in the 25th lap prompted World of Outlaws officials to throw the red flag so the sprinters could be refueled. During the red period, Kinser's crew discovered a hole in the #11 Valvoline Maxim's right rear tire. Instead of changing the tire and relinquishing Steve's fifth-place running position, his crew members packed the hole with mud. The tire held its air pressure during the final six laps, enabling Kinser to pass "The Wild Child" and finish fourth. Within seconds after the green flag replaced the red, Hillenburg ran away from the 24-car field. Blaney was racing through the fourth corner when Andy took the checkered flag. Kenny Jacobs drove the #71M Ecowater Stealth into third place in the "A" Feature, ahead of Kinser, Haudenschild, Donnie Kreitz, Jr., Ecowater Fast-Time Award winner Mark Kinser, Lance Dewease and Two Winners Racing teammates Jeff Swindell and Joe Gaerte.
