Kinser Beats 'The Dude' to Win Nationals By Richard Day KNOXVILLE, IA (August 14) - "Give Karl Kinser a red and he's lethal," defending Amoco Knoxville Nationals champion Danny Lasoski said following Saturday's "A" Feature at Knoxville Raceway. Lasoski, who led the first 17 laps from the pole, could only watch as Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Mark Kinser drove to the middle of the legendary semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval's third corner to pass him for the lead during an 18th-lap restart. It was all Kinser could do to stay ahead as "The Dude" made two last-lap runs at him. Mark was only .378 seconds ahead when he took the checkered flag and claimed his second Nationals championship in four years. TNN Motorsports televised all the action from the championship racing program live. "That little Dude is tough," a tearful Kinser said. "He showed me his face there in the last corner. I've done some good things and I've done some bad things. I've done some bad things to the wrong people and some bad things to the right people. Everything I have is by the grace of God." Mark gave much of the credit for the $100,000 victory to his father, 13-time Nationals championship car owner Karl Kinser, who he hugged on the Amoco trophy stage. "Sometimes I think I'm smarter than he is," Mark said. "Times get tough - we're out here trying to make a living - but he's my dad and I love him." Kinser also loved the changes Karl made to the #5M Mopar Maxim during the 18th-lap red period. "He changed three shocks," Mark said, "the right rear and the two fronts. That gave me what I needed to pass Danny. He ran the bottom all race long, and I wouldn't have been able to get around him had dad not changed our setup." Lasoski, whose good friend Jimmy Carr returned to his crew after Friday's races, used the same right rear tire compound - a Goodyear 30 - and the same setup he used to pass Sammy Swindell deep in the second corner in last year's Nationals championship feature. He burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the 30-lap main event. He was a half-straightaway ahead of outside polesitter Tyler Walker when he entered lapped traffic during the sixth lap. Lasoski's crew chief, Mark Ellis, said Kinser would have to pass the #83 Beef Packers Eagle on the outside because "The Dude" was staying in the low groove. Scott Whitworth took the leaders out of lapped traffic three laps later when he stopped in turn two. Kinser passed Sammy Swindell and Kevin Gobrecht to take over third place within two laps after the green flag replaced the yellow. Kinser used an inside move in the fourth corner to pass Walker for second late in the 12th lap, then lined up behind Lasoski after Frankie Kerr spun in turn three the next time around. Kinser kept pace with "The Dude" as the race resumed, only to have Gobrecht avert his attention from the leader. The Mopar team got the break it needed when Knoxville Raceway points leader Terry McCarl hit Joey Saldana and flipped. Rookie of the Nationals P.J. Chesson also collided with McCarl and flipped, bringing out the fateful red flag late in the 18th lap. It was the opportunity Karl needed to change the setup on the #5M. It also gave Steve Smith's Best Appearing Crew a chance to get the mud out of the right front wheel on the #19 Ingersoll-Rand Black Bandit. Kinser kept pace with Lasoski as the race resumed. He surged ahead in the second corner, then raced wheel-to-wheel with him down the back straightaway before passing "The Dude" for the lead in the middle groove in turn three. Mark was racing away from Lasoski when Non-Qualifiers Feature winner Craig Dollansky stopped high in the third corner to bring out the caution flag one lap later. Kinser controlled the ensuing restart, but Lasoski came ever so close to regaining the lead with inside moves in turns three and four late in the final lap. "We won't starve if we don't win the $100,000, but I'm sure hungry for that 13th trophy," Karl said before the championship feature. Gobrecht finished third, ahead of Smith, 19th-starting Johnny Herrera, Walker, Steve Kinser, "B" Feature winner Jeff Swindell, Donny Schatz and Sammy Swindell. Andy Hillenburg didn't actually put his #2 Luxaire J&J on the track for the championship feature, but he extended his "A" Feature qualifying streak to 508 by taking a provisional.
