Solberg disqualified from Q2 after clash with Ekstrom in Latvia

Petter Solberg has been disqualified from Q2 at the Latvian round of the WRX for contact with title-rival Mattias Ekstrom, and as a result is last of the 22 competitors still running in the Latvian event ahead of day two.

Solberg was ‘black flagged’ for his final lap move on Ekstrom at the circuit’s first hairpin, which takes the rallycross track from tarmac to loose section.

The decision was made by the race director, after both Solberg and Ekstrom had been requested to produce their onboard camera footage.

In Document 3.4, Car #1 Petter Solberg was black flagged for ‘pushing and overtaking’. Solberg was unavailable to comment at the circuit.

The Norwegian’s team made an appeal, but the race director’s decision was upheld by the event stewards. Ekstrom was also penalised for his move in the previous corner on Solberg.

The DTM driver was given a black and white flag; effectively a first warning. A second warning during the event would result in a black flag.

With Solberg’s disqualification taken into account, every driver below sixth in the original overnight standings moves up a position, including Ekstrom.

Solberg is now 22nd overall and with only the top 12 going through to the semi-finals after Q4, the double-champion faces an uphill struggle in closing the gap to Ekstrom in the championship standings.
