Things got as tough as tarmac for Daniel Oliveira in Argentina
The BWRT driver retires early on the mix-surfaced second’s leg opener.
Saturday’s report. Daniel Oliveira and Carlos Magalhaes suffered a back-to-back strike as he retired on the second leg in the Rally Argentina, sixth round of the FIA World Rally Championship.
Rally Argentina is one of the most traditional rounds of the WRC and the expectations prior to this event were high for the team. The wide variety of surfaces, the overcrowded roads, and the feeling of racing like locals added something extra to this event.
In the second day of action in the South American venue the BWRT crew members could barely enjoy driving the MINI John Cooper Works WRC for some kilometres before going off the road on SS8
Las Jarillas - Falda del Carmen stage featured a first gravel section where Oliveira showed a good pace at the at early split points; however, it was on the tarmac section where Daniel got troubled and had to retire.
What’s next? After considering the damages on Daniel’s MINI John Cooper Works WRC the BWRT decided it wasn’t worth it to re-join the competition under the Super Rally system and it retired from the event. The next compromise for the Brazilian squad will be the Acropolis Rally of Greece which will take place from 16th to 19th June.
Event Info. Sebastien Ogier (Citroen) has become the fourth driver to lead this Rally Argentina after the Finnish Jari-Matti Latvala (Ford) retired from the race with a broken suspension. The Frenchman has a 43.7s advantage over Mikko Hirvonen (Ford). Third comes Sebastien Loeb (Citroen).
The last assault. Although the last day of competition has just four stages scheduled, and nothing should be taken for granted. Far from being an easy task, the event’s organizers planned a tremendous challenge: a 48.21km stage that links Ascochinga to Agua de Oro. If the drivers and the machines succeed in completing the longest section so far this year, they will have the chance of picking up some extra points in the Power Stage. The first car will hit the road at 8:09 a.m.
Brazil WRT driver Daniel Oliveira said:
“Honestly, it has been an extremely short day so as to draw a conclusion. We just went off the road on the tarmac section and we damaged the car. Among other parts that were damaged, there was a broken radiator that was the cause of our retirement.
There wasn’t anything positive about this second leg. In the Service Area, the team evaluated the damages on the car and it wasn’t worth having a try tomorrow. Now it’s time to think about our next event in Greece”.
