Mexico WRC: Sordo penalty snaps Hyundai podium streak

Hyundai driver Dani Sordo has lost his third place in the 2016 Rally Mexico due to a time penalty.

Spaniard Sordo, who finished the rally with a gap of 1m58.5s over M-Sport's Mads Ostberg, had two minutes added to his time a few hours after the rally had been completed - and was narrowly demoted to fourth place.

The statement released by the organisers of the event confirmed that Sordo's penalty was a result of the Spaniard having used 29 tyres throughout the rally - one more than was allowed by Article 7.2 of the Supplementary Regulations.

Hyundai's new i20 WRC previously celebrated podiums in Monte Carlo and Sweden with Thierry Neuville and Hayden Paddon.

However, the Korean manufacturer has now been left podium-less in Mexico, with Paddon taking fifth and Neuville crashing.

Sordo's penalty also means that Ostberg, who sits runner-up in the championship, has closed his gap to leader Sebastien Ogier, the Norwegian now trailing by 35 points.
